INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State defeated Concord 98-67 on Monday night at the Walker Convocation Center, securing its seventh win in the last eight games. WVSU controlled the game from the second quarter onward, building a sizable lead and never looking back. The Yellow Jackets improve to 15-12 overall and 9-10 in conference play. Concord falls to 14-13 overall and 10-9 in the league. WVSU will face the University of Charleston on Saturday, March 1, at 2 p.m.
WVSU held a 24-17 lead at the end of the first quarter. The teams traded baskets early before WVSU built a seven-point lead on a fast-break layup just before the quarter ended. Concord scored first, but WVSU answered with multiple baskets in the paint. Shanley Woods and Baylee Goins each connected from beyond the arc to keep WVSU in control. Concord's Abbie Smith led her team with seven points in the quarter.
The Yellow Jackets took full control in the second quarter, outscoring Concord 29-15 to take a 53-32 lead into halftime. WVSU opened the quarter with a 12-2 run, fueled by second-chance points and transition baskets. The Yellow Jackets forced multiple turnovers and capitalized with fast-break layups. Emyah Fortenberry led the charge with multiple baskets inside. Concord struggled from the field, shooting 6-for-12 in the quarter.
WVSU extended its lead in the third quarter, outscoring Concord 30-10 to take an 83-42 lead. The Yellow Jackets continued their dominance in transition, scoring off turnovers and pushing the tempo. Woods and Goins each hit three-pointers to stretch the lead past 30. Fortenberry remained active on the boards, securing offensive rebounds and converting second-chance points. Concord was limited to just three field goals in the quarter.
Concord outscored WVSU 25-15 in the final quarter but was unable to overcome the deficit. The Yellow Jackets rotated their lineup, with the bench contributing key minutes down the stretch. Saniya Hymes provided a spark with a three-pointer late in the period. Concord closed the game on a 7-0 run, but the outcome was already decided. WVSU finished with 61 bench points and a 42-36 edge in points in the paint.
West Virginia State will close the regular season at Charleston on Sat. Mar 1. The two rivals will tangle beginning at 2:00 p.m.
