West Virginia State Dominates Davis & Elkins for Sixth Straight Win

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University extended its winning streak to six games with a dominant 90-50 victory over Davis & Elkins (2-21, 1-16 MEC) on Wednesday night at the Walker Convocation Center. WVSU (14-11, 8-9 MEC) took control early and never looked back, securing the wire-to-wire win behind strong shooting and a suffocating defense.

WVSU set the tone in the first quarter, opening with a 12-3 run sparked by back-to-back three-pointers from Shanley Woods and Baylee Goins. The Yellow Jackets forced multiple turnovers, converting them into fast-break points to build a double-digit lead midway through the period. Davis & Elkins struggled offensively, shooting just 13.3 percent from the field, while WVSU capitalized on second-chance opportunities. Late baskets from Kenly Rogers and Latifat Olatunji extended the lead to 23-8 by the end of the quarter.

In the second quarter, WVSU's offensive efficiency improved, shooting 56.3 percent from the field. Goins connected on another three-pointer, and Zakorrah Russell added a transition layup to push the lead past 20. Davis & Elkins continued to struggle from beyond the arc, missing all five of its three-point attempts in the period. The Yellow Jackets' defense remained active, recording multiple steals and blocks to limit the Senators' scoring chances. Olatunji added five points from the free-throw line, and WVSU entered halftime with a commanding 50-16 advantage.

Davis & Elkins found some rhythm in the third quarter, outscoring its first-half total with 15 points in the period. The Yellow Jackets, however, maintained their defensive intensity, forcing turnovers that led to transition baskets. Rogers knocked down another three-pointer, and Woods followed with a long-range shot of her own. Olatunji continued to make an impact inside, grabbing rebounds and protecting the paint. She finished with eight blocks, the most by a WVSU player in a single game since Dec. 6, 2017. Despite the Senators' improved shooting, WVSU remained in control, leading 67-31 heading into the final period.

WVSU closed out the game strong, matching its first-quarter output with 23 points in the fourth. The Yellow Jackets' bench provided valuable minutes, with Ahjanae Young and Jessica Osuanah adding key defensive plays. Davis & Elkins had its highest-scoring quarter, but the deficit remained insurmountable. Woods led all scorers with 15 points, while Goins added 13, and Russell contributed 14 points and six rebounds. Olatunji finished with eight points, 11 rebounds, and her historic eight blocks.

The Yellow Jackets will look to extend their winning streak to seven when they travel to West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, Feb. 22.
