GLENVILLE, W.Va. — Baylee Goins scored a game-high 29 points and West Virginia State delivered one of its strongest offensive performances of the season on Saturday afternoon, but a difficult first quarter proved too much to overcome in a 94–83 setback to Glenville State inside the Waco Center. The Yellow Jackets outscored the Pioneers 43–36 after halftime and generated 25 assists on 30 made baskets, showing extended stretches of high-level execution despite the road defeat.
West Virginia State found rhythm early behind Goins,
Latisha Parris and
Lillian Jackson, but Glenville State turned defensive pressure into a series of runouts that shaped the opening 10 minutes. The Pioneers scored 14 first-quarter points off turnovers and used a 34-point surge to build separation. Even so, State remained efficient when it settled into the halfcourt, with Goins attacking from all three levels and Parris sparking possessions with her work on the offensive glass.
The Jackets continued to battle in the second quarter with balanced production across the lineup. Parris added a transition three, Jackson facilitated the offense and
Jennesse Byrd supplied valuable minutes off the bench. But Glenville again capitalized on WVSU miscues, finishing the half with 20 points off turnovers to take a 58–40 advantage into the break.
State responded with energy after halftime, putting together one of its best stretches of the afternoon. Parris opened the third quarter with a three, Hickman protected the rim with three blocks, and Goins continued her scoring tear to chip away at the deficit. The Jackets produced 20 points in the period and forced Glenville into tougher looks, but the Pioneers' 49 bench points helped them maintain a cushion.
WVSU closed strong, scoring 23 points in the fourth quarter behind Hickman's perimeter shooting and Jackson's late facilitation. Hickman knocked down four threes to finish with 15 points, and Jackson added 12 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals in another all-around effort. Parris matched them with 12 points and seven boards, while Byrd contributed six points and six rebounds as State totaled 38 points in the paint and 27 from its reserves.
Glenville State finished with 35 points off turnovers and 50 points in the paint but was outscored by the Jackets 43–36 in the second half.
West Virginia State shot 30-of-74 from the field, 10-of-21 from three and 13-of-17 at the line while recording 39 rebounds, 25 assists, nine steals and five blocks.
Glenville State countered with 36-of-78 shooting, nine threes and 13-of-19 at the stripe, adding 49 bench points and 15 second-chance points.
