BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — West Virginia State women's soccer added to its historic season Friday, landing nine All-Mountain East Conference selections and appearing at No. 8 in the Atlantic Region when the latest NCAA regional rankings were released on Tuesday.
The Yellow Jackets (14-3-1, 14-1-1 MEC) turned in their most dominant regular season to date, finishing second in the league in goals scored (54) and first in points per game (8.33) while allowing just 1.18 goals per match — third-best in the conference. The effort helped propel WVSU into the regional top 10 in the latest regional rankings.
Four earn First-Team honors
Senior goalkeeper
Poppy Bastock, forward
Leila Karam, and midfielders
Laura Pouedras and
Aika Tobaru were each named First Team All-MEC.
- Bastock anchored a defense that posted five shutouts, tied for the league lead. She finished the year with a 1.25 goals-against average, .734 save percentage, and a 13-3-1 record in 17 starts.
- Karam led WVSU in scoring with 10 goals and 22 points, ranking third in the MEC in goals per game (.556) and fifth in points per game (1.22).
- Pouedras paced the attack in creativity, leading the team with six assists — second-most in the conference — while adding five goals and three game-winners.
- Tobaru rounded out the first-team selections with four goals, three assists, and two game-winning strikes from the midfield.
Four more recognized on Second Team
Sophomore forward Sara Paris Filter joined defenders Hannah Aneley Núñez Perreira,
Avril Amil Ruiz, and
Nagi Higashi on the Second Team All-MEC.
- Filter ranked second on the squad with eight goals and 20 points, going a perfect 2-for-2 on penalty kicks. She sits seventh in the conference in goals per game (.471) and sixth in points per game (1.18).
- Núñez Perreira started all 18 matches, recording one goal and three assists from her defensive position, including one game-winner, while helping lead a unit that allowed just 1.18 goals per game.
- Amil Ruiz anchored the back line with 18 starts and 15 shots, providing consistent defensive coverage and leadership.
- Higashi appeared in 17 matches and contributed two assists while maintaining a .714 shots-on-goal percentage (5 of 7).
Hernández Díaz earns Honorable Mention
Forward María Alejandra Hernández Díaz was named Honorable Mention All-MEC after contributing four goals and three assists, tying for fourth on the team with 11 points.
WVSU's nine All-MEC honorees mark one of the largest totals in program history.
