Trick? Nope—Just a Treat! WVSU Sweeps Second-Place Concord on Spooktacular Night

INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State delivered one of its most complete performances of the season Tuesday night, sweeping second-place Concord, 25–16, 25–18, 25–20, inside the Walker Convocation Center. The Yellow Jackets (12–10, 6–4 MEC) entered the night fourth in the South Division but controlled play from start to finish to hand the Mountain Lions (19–4, 7–3 MEC) a pivotal conference loss.

Senior middle blocker Nicole Gartner Custodio, the reigning MEC Offensive Player of the Week and the league leader in both hitting efficiency and total blocks per set, continued her exceptional form with 11 kills on .526 hitting and six total blocks, including three solo. Alyssa Hill led all players with 12 kills, while junior outside hitter Carmen Perez recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 10 kills and 17 digs. Setter Kelsey McKeehan guided the offense with 38 assists, libero Lilly Adkins anchored the defense with 21 digs, and Emma Pomaret added three aces—a season and career high—to lead a strong serving effort.

West Virginia State seized control early in the opening frame. After trailing 4–3, the Yellow Jackets rattled off eight straight points to force a Concord timeout and later extended the margin to 15–9 before a 5–0 closing surge sealed the set, 25–16. In the second set, the teams traded points early before State used a 5–0 run to break a 2–2 tie. Concord narrowed the gap to 20–17, but the Yellow Jackets responded with a 5–1 finishing push to take the set, 25–18. WVSU once again started strong in the third, using a 5–0 burst to turn a 3–3 tie into an 8–3 lead. The Yellow Jackets later strung together four straight to go up 19–11 and held off a late 4–0 rally by the Mountain Lions before closing out the sweep, 25–20.

As a team, West Virginia State hit .208 with 42 kills, 40 assists, 67 digs, eight blocks, and four aces. Concord was limited to .069 hitting with 32 kills, 27 assists, 54 digs, and five blocks.

West Virginia State will travel north to face West Liberty on Friday, Oct. 31, at 7 p.m. inside the ASRC.
