WVSU student-athletes earn a 3.15 GPA in the spring

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State's student-athletes combined for a 3.15 grade point average (GPA) in the spring 2024 semester, marking the 12th consecutive semester of a 3.0 cumulative GPA or better for WVSU Athletics. A total of 175 student-athletes, or 67 percent of all student-athletes, earned a 3.0 GPA or above this past academic semester. They were the first group to be recognized as Dr. John L. Fuller, Sr. Scholar-Athletes as part of the new academic achievement program.

"For six years now, our student-athletes, coaches and staff have been emphasizing academic performance and meeting the benchmark set for them," said Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Nate Burton. "This accomplishment is a testament to their hard work and a realization that our academic standards have been fully ingrained into our culture." 

The women's soccer and women's tennis teams earned the highest grade point averages with 3.83 and 3.8 GPAs, respectively. Every one of their student-athletes recorded a 3.0 GPA or better. The men's tennis team also accomplished this feat while combining for a 3.5 GPA. The baseball team posted a 3.4 GPA with 89 percent of its student-athletes achieving a 3.0 GPA or higher. Meanwhile, the volleyball team also registered a 3.4 GPA with 81 percent of its student-athletes meeting or exceeding the 3.0 GPA mark.
