West Virginia State tallies five podium finishes at the MEC Indoor Championship

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia State men's and women's track and field teams made five appearances on the podiums of the Mountain East Conference Indoor Championship on Saturday night. The men's team finished in eighth place with 36 points while the women's team finished in ninth place with 35 points.

The MEC announced conference awards for indoor track and field shortly after the conclusion of the tournament. West Virginia State's Candace Morris was named the women's freshman of the year. She hit the NCAA provisional mark for the 60 meters for the second time this season with a time of 7.62 seconds in the qualifying round.

The WVSU men's and women's 4x400 relay teams both came in third place with season-best times. Matthias Watson, Jayden Smith, Caedon Trotter and Kaname Bryant combined for a 400 meter time of 3:21.51 on the men's side. Jaylin Clayton, Shaianne Wiley, Zoe Ledet and Jaime Preston combined for a 400 meter time of 4:00.32 on the women's side.

Zoe McDonald made the podium with a time of 9.24 seconds in the women's 60 meter hurdles. She finished third in the finals.

Curtis McCray placed second in the men's high jump. He set a new personal record of 1.93 meters.

Robert Salhab also set a new personal record with a distance of 16.18 meters in the men's weight throw. He earned a spot on the podium by finishing third.
