INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State University (3-1, 1-0 MEC) earned a gritty 82-79 win over Glenville State (3-2, 1-1 MEC) in their Mountain East Conference opener at the Walker Convocation Center. The Yellow Jackets overcame a significant second-half scoring drought and a heated exchange that resulted in a player ejection to preserve the victory.
WVSU controlled the pace early, building a 39-36 halftime lead. Miguel Martinez anchored the Yellow Jackets' attack with timely scoring and solid rebounding, while Arthur Cox's efficiency helped sustain the offensive rhythm. Glenville relied on its perimeter shooting, hitting five three-pointers in the first half to keep the game close.
The second half was marked by intensity and momentum swings. At the 7:32 mark, a scuffle resulted in technical fouls for WVSU's Miguel Martinez and Glenville's Prince Mosengo. Moments later, Mosengo received a second technical and was ejected, altering Glenville's rotation.
WVSU appeared to take control with a 9-2 run, highlighted by a three-pointer from Jae Slack. However, the Yellow Jackets endured a critical scoring drought of nearly four minutes late in the game, allowing Glenville to narrow the lead. Devin Collins spearheaded Glenville's rally, tying the game at 75 with under three minutes left.
In the final minute, Miguel Martinez's two clutch free throws and Nate Mims' pivotal block on Glenville's last shot attempt secured the victory for the Yellow Jackets.

Devin Collins paced Glenville with a game-high 24 points and 7 rebounds, supported by Ziri Blackwood's 15 points.
The Yellow Jackets travel to Athens, WV, on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2024, to face Concord University at the Carter Center. The men are scheduled to tip at 4 p.m.
