SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia State University's women's soccer team showcased resilience and late-game heroics to edge Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) 2-1 in double overtime in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Quarterfinals on Friday afternoon at Shepherd University.
The match began with IUP taking an early lead in the 4th minute. Julia Csernyik capitalized on a defensive lapse to give the Crimson Hawks a 1-0 advantage. West Virginia State, however, dominated possession for the remainder of the half, firing eight shots to IUP's four. Despite several close chances, including a pair of shots from Sara París Fílter that forced saves by IUP goalkeeper Makenna Yarrow, the Yellow Jackets went into halftime trailing.
WVSU leveled the match in the 63rd minute when París Fílter, the team's offensive talisman, scored her 13th goal of the season. Assisted by Billie Jean Davies, París Fílter's strike ignited the Yellow Jackets' offense. They continued to pressure IUP's defense, launching eight more shots in the half. Galindo preserved the tie with a key save on a close-range shot by Hannah Scardina in the 63rd minute.
After a scoreless first overtime, the game's decisive moment came in the second overtime. In the 103rd minute, París Fílter turned provider, delivering a pinpoint pass to Karissa Vela, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner for her fourth goal of the season. The dramatic finish sent the Yellow Jackets into the regional semifinals.
West Virginia State outshot IUP 20-6, with 12 of those attempts on target compared to IUP's five. París Fílter was the standout player, contributing a goal and an assist while taking eight shots, six of which were on target. Galindo recorded four saves in goal for WVSU. Yarrow was a defensive stalwart for IUP, making 10 saves to keep the Crimson Hawks in the match.
With the victory, West Virginia State (16-3-3) advances to the NCAA Atlantic Regional Semifinals to face top-seeded Shepherd University. The match is set for Sunday, Nov. 24 at 1 p.m. at Shepherd University.
