West Virginia State Women’s Soccer Advances to MEC Semifinals with 5-0 Win Over West Liberty

INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State University women's soccer team began their postseason campaign with a commanding 5-0 victory over West Liberty University in the Mountain East Conference Tournament quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon at Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium. The Yellow Jackets improved to 13-3-3 on the season and will face top-seeded Frostburg State in the semifinals at Bobcat Stadium.

The Hilltoppers end their season at 6-11-2.

After a tightly contested first half that ended in a scoreless draw, WVSU found their rhythm in the second half and unleashed a relentless offensive display. Sara París Fílter opened the scoring early in the second half at the 45:40 mark with a well-placed shot that broke the deadlock.

Sandra Linares doubled the lead at 56:37 with an assist from Kay-Lynn McCall, finishing off a swift counterattack. Leila Karam delivered a standout performance, netting two goals late in the match. Her first came at 81:00, assisted by Kinga Koronkiewicz, and her second at 86:33 off a precise pass from Paula Herold. Emma Farrelly sealed the commanding victory with a strike in the 89th minute, assisted by Kinga Koronkiewicz.

Goalkeeper Laura Galindo recorded her 11th clean sheet of the season, making two saves while anchoring a backline that smothered the Hilltoppers' offensive efforts. WVSU outshot West Liberty 21-6, including a dominant 13-2 advantage in shots on goal.

The Yellow Jackets now prepare for a challenging semifinal matchup against Frostburg State, the top seed in the North Division, on Wednesday, Nov. 13.
