INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University (9-8, 4-0 MEC) defeated Glenville State (3-11, 1-3 MEC) in a straight-set victory, winning 25-12, 25-11, 25-20, on Wednesday evening at the Walker Convocation Center. The Yellow Jackets extended their unbeaten start in Mountain East Conference play, improving to 4-0.
West Virginia State posted an impressive .427 hitting percentage as a team, with 40 kills against just eight errors on 75 total attacks.
Kiersten Eggleton led the offensive charge with 31 assists and added two kills. The Yellow Jackets also served 13 aces, with
Morgan Caba contributing five of them to go along with 12 digs.
Alyssa Hill and Nicole Custodio were key at the net, with Hill registering 5 slams and Custodio tallying 6 kills and 5 blocks.
Maureen Mathews was efficient, recording 9 kills on 12 attacks for a .750 hitting percentage.
Glenville State struggled offensively, managing just a .077 hitting percentage as a team, with 22 kills and 16 errors on 78 attacks. Rita Kelly led the Pioneers with seven kills, while setter Bella Baragona provided 18 assists and two service aces.
The Yellow Jackets set the tone with an early kill by Custodio, assisted by Eggleton, to go up 1-0. WVSU capitalized on attack errors from Glenville State to extend their lead, with key contributions from
Valencia Wilder, who delivered a kill and back-to-back service aces from
Morgan Caba, pushing the score to 6-1.
Despite a brief response from Glenville State's Malerie Ross, who notched a kill to make it 6-2, WVSU maintained their dominance.
Maureen Mathews added to the Yellow Jackets' offensive firepower with a kill, and Wilder's ace increased the margin to 12-7. WVSU's relentless pressure and efficient attacking led to a commanding 25-12 first set win.
The Yellow Jackets quickly jumped to a 2-0 lead, capitalizing on a bad set by Glenville's Bella Baragona and a kill from Custodio, assisted by Eggleton. Though Glenville managed to score following a service error, WVSU regained momentum with a kill from Steele and another from Custodio, pushing the score to 4-1. Wilder added a kill and a service ace, further extending the lead to 10-5. Mathews added several kills, widening the gap to 15-6. WVSU's relentless pressure continued with service aces from Caba and a kill by Hill. Mathews sealed the set with a final kill, assisted by
Ashlynne Davis, giving West Virginia State a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
Glenville took an early 1-0 lead with a service ace, but
Sydney Shamblin quickly responded with a kill, assisted by Eggleton, to tie the score. The Yellow Jackets capitalized on Glenville's errors, with Custodio delivering consecutive service aces to extend the lead to 4-2. Hill and
Kennedy Stewart contributed key kills, keeping WVSU in control as they reached 9-6.
Glenville managed to tie the score at 17-17 after a service ace from Kelly and a kill from Larissa Howe, and eventually took the lead at 20-19. State wouldn't be denied the sweep though as they scored the final six points of the match. Shamblin finished off the match with a final kill, assisted by Eggleton, securing the 25-20 set three win and completing the 3-0 match sweep.
State hits the road Friday, Oct. 11 for a 7:00 p.m. tilt in Buckhannon, W.Va. against West Virginia Wesleyan
