Eggleton surpasses 1000 digs in straight-set victory over Concord

ATHENS, W.Va. – West Virginia State University (15-9, 9-1 MEC) swept Concord University (12-14, 5-5 MEC) on Tuesday night at the Carter Center, taking the match in three sets with scores of 25-12, 25-20, and 25-18. In a milestone achievement, setter Kiersten Eggleton surpassed 1,000 career digs, adding to her impressive contributions in both setting and defense throughout the night.

West Virginia State stormed out of the gates in the first set, hitting a blistering .400 with 17 kills. Three Concord errors gave WVSU an 8-4 lead. Concord was on the verge of coming back, trimming the deficit to a single point at 8-7. State then rattled off 11 straight points to take a commanding 19-7 lead. With Concord struggling to find its rhythm, the Yellow Jackets cruised to a dominant 25-12 win to open the match.

The second set was more competitive, with seven ties and three lead changes. Concord pushed back, but WVSU capitalized on key plays from Hannah Steele and Eggleton, edging out a 25-20 victory to take a 2-0 match lead.

In the final set, the Yellow Jackets closed out the match with efficient attacking, hitting .308. Moleni and Wilder continued to excel at the net, while Eggleton added her 10th dig of the match, and 1,000th of her career, during a crucial rally. WVSU's defense, which tallied nine blocks overall, stifled any hopes of a Concord comeback in the 25-18 set win.

Eggleton finished the match with 38 assists and 10 digs, leading the team both offensively and defensively. Four Yellow Jackets posted double-digit kill numbers with Moleni posting a match-high 12 kills. Custodio anchered the blocking game with seven rejections. Caba led the back line for State with 14 digs.

State returns home for a critical match against the West Liberty Hilltoppers on Friday, Nov. 1 in the Walker Convocation Center. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
