INSTITUTE W.Va. – West Virginia State University (8-8, 3-0 MEC) swept Concord University (4-12, 0-2 MEC) 3-0 at the Walker Convocation Center on Tuesday night to be left as the sole team in the MEC South to have an unblemished conference record. WVSU won in straight sets (25-18, 25-16, 25-15) in front of a home crowd of 491.
WVSU began the match with a strong offensive showing, hitting .400 with 18 kills.
Hannah Steele led the attack, delivering crucial kills to maintain the Yellow Jackets' momentum. A mid-set surge of 10-3 by West Virginia State expanded the lead, 19-12 and State capitalized on Concord errors to cruise to a set one victory, 25-18.
In the second set, WVSU maintained control from the start, posting a .333 hitting percentage.
Kiersten Eggleton orchestrated the offense with 12 assists in the set, keeping Concord's defense off-balance.
Valencia Wilder contributed with key blocks, while Steele and Mathews continued their dominance at the net. The Yellow Jackets' defense allowed just 16 points, securing a comfortable 25-16 victory.
WVSU continued their dominance in the final set, holding Concord to a -.079 hitting percentage. Despite early pressure from Concord, State pulled ahead with solid serving and another standout performance from Steele.
Nicole Gartner Custodio added more blocks to stifle Concord's attack. The Yellow Jackets took control midway through and closed out the match 25-15.
Hannah Steele finished with 16 kills, while
Kiersten Eggleton dished out 36 assists and contributed 15 digs. WVSU hit .325 as a team with 47 slams to Concord's 30 and recorded 10 blocks to Concord's 4.
West Virginia State will next face Davis & Elkins on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7:00 p.m. at the McDonnell Center in Elkins, W.Va.
