Track & Field posts season-high team scores at HBCU Indoor Classic

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – West Virginia State's men's and women's track & field teams competed in the HBCU Indoor Classic at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center on Saturday. The meet was comprised of WVSU, Prairie View, Central State, Kentucky State, Tuskegee, Mississippi Valley and Fisk. 

The WVSU men's team earned a season-high 40 points to finish fourth in the meet while the women's team scored a season-best 20 points to finish ahead of Fisk and just four points behind hosts Kentucky State.

Myles Simes picked up a point for the men's team in the 200 meters with a sixth-place finish. He recorded a time of 22.95 seconds. 

The men's team scored the rest of its points in field events. The Yellow Jackets registered 10 points in the shot put, 12 points in the triple jump and 19 points in the weight throw.

In the shot put, Robert Salhab III and Andrew Walker finished third (+6pts) and fourth (+4pts) respectively. Salhab recorded a distance of 13.45m while Walker was a fraction behind with a distance of 13.41m.

In the triple jump, Leotis McNeil (13.27m), Tariq Murray (12.78m) and Yadiel Rivera (11.99m) finished third, fourth and fifth respectively. McNeil added six points, Murray added four points and Rivera added two points to their team's tally.

The biggest boost to the men's team score came from the weight throw. Salhab (2nd), Walker (3rd), Michael Chatman (5th) and Jonathan Berry (6th) all earned points for their team. Salhab and Walker threw for 12.78m and 12.53m respectively.

The women's team picked up most of its points on the track. The Yellow Jackets scored three points in the 60m, 11 points in the 200m and four points in the 4x400m relay. They added two points in the weight throw.

Jaime Preston (7.99s) and Antiya McAlister (8.02s) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 60m. 

Zoe Ledet (3rd), Jaime Preston (4th) and Jeneva Golden (6th) all ran times in the 200m that were good enough to earn points. Ledet led the Yellow Jackets with a time of 26 seconds flat. Preston and Golden were not far off with times of 26.05s and 26.10s respectively.

Golden, Preston, Shaianne Wiley and Jaylin Clayton combined for a time of 4:18.16 in the 4x400m relay to finish fourth. They added four points to their team's tally.

Victoria Colon placed fifth in the weight throw with a distance of 10.28m to give her team another two points.
