WVSU eclipses 100 points in win over Salem

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State men's basketball (8-5, 4-3 MEC) defeated Salem (5-10) by a final score of 104-87 on Saturday afternoon at the Walker Convocation Center. The Yellow Jackets scored 100 points or more for the first time this season by shooting 55 percent from the floor and 48 percent from three-point range.

Miguel Martinez and Antonio Carter each posted 18 points to lead WVSU in scoring. Martinez shot 5-of-7 from behind the arc. Kalil Camara and Mahzi Thames each recorded 13 points. Anthony Pittman registered 11 points while Nate Mims and Arthur Cox each had 10 points in the contest.

The opening five minutes of the game was played evenly with WVSU gaining a slight edge, 12-11, after Cox knocked down a jumper just before the 15-minute mark. The Tigers then moved in front with a 9-2 run over the ensuing four minutes that gave them a six-point advantage, 20-14.

State responded with a 12-2 run over the following four minutes. The run was sparked by back-to-back threes from Thames and Camara. A jumper from Carter capped it and put WVSU up by four, 26-22, with seven minutes until halftime.

Salem was able to close the gap to two points, 33-31, on the other side of the three-minute mark before the Yellow Jackets pulled away. In the remainder of the first half, State outscored the Tigers 10-2 to go up by 10 points, 43-33, at the break. Martinez hit a buzzer-beating trey to make it so.

The momentum from the first half carried over into the second half. The Yellow Jackets opened the second half with an 18-5 run in which they shot 5-of-6 from the field, 4-of-4 from downtown and 4-of-5 from the free throw line. They were left with a massive 23-point lead, 61-38, with 15:30 left to play.

The Tigers were unable to make a real dent on the large deficit they faced early in the second half. They managed to close the gap to 12 points, 81-69, with 5:38 remaining in the game. The glimmer of hope was quickly erased with a 10-3 surge by State over a minute-and-a-half span. A step-back jumper by Carter around the four-minute mark gave WVSU a 19-point cushion, 91-72, to work with for the final stretch.

The Yellow Jackets turned on cruise control after gaining another sizable advantage and reached the century mark when Landry Palata sunk a single free throw with approximately two minutes on the clock. Carter's driving layup with 56 seconds to go gave the game its final score.

State will remain at home for its next contest against Davis & Elkins on Wednesday, Jan. 17th. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
