Volleyball splits on first day of Mount Olive Invitational

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The West Virginia State volleyball team (3-3) dropped a match to Shaw, 3-0, before defeating Mount Olive, 3-1, at the University of Mount Olive Invitational on Friday.

KEY PLAYERS
  • Kiersten Eggleton recorded a career-high 48 assists in the match against Mount Olive.
  • Diamond'Nique Young posted 27 kills over the two matches to lead the WVSU attack.
  • Alex Darby made 31 digs on the day to bolster the Yellow Jacket defense.

MATCH 1: SHAW 3, WVSU 0
  • An 11-2 run by Shaw early in the first set left too much distance for State to possibly close. The Bears ended up taking the first set by a final score of 25-15.
  • Shaw jumped out to an 11-4 lead early in the second set. WVSU battled back to within three points, 21-18, after back-to-back kills by Young and Kaitlyn Cabral. The late effort was not quite enough as the Bears went on to take the second set by a final score of 25-19.
  • Shaw once again jumped out to an early lead, 10-3, in the third set. The Yellow Jackets went on 6-1 run midway through the set to close the gap to two points, 16-14. The Bears then finished the set with a 9-3 run. Shaw took the third set by a final score of 25-17 and the match.

MATCH 2: WVSU 3, UMO 1
  • The Yellow Jackets opened the first set on an 8-3 run that included three service aces and four kills. The Trojans hung to State's heels until they finally tied the score at 17-apiece. WVSU stopped the comeback there by finishing the set on an 8-4 run. Jacklyn Simms registered three kills during the run before Eggleton claimed the set with a service ace, 25-21.
  • State rushed out to an 8-2 lead in the second set. Seven out of the first eight points were the result of WVSU kills. The momentum never left the Yellow Jackets as UMO was unable to get within more than three points of State for the remainder of the set. WVSU claimed the second set by a final score of 25-21.
  • The Trojans jumped out to an 8-3 advantage at the start of the third set. WVSU then briefly took the lead with a 7-1 run followed by an exchange of points. The Yellow Jackets played catch up for the remainder of the third set and tied the score on three occasions. The last five points of the set all went Mount Olive's way to force a fourth set.
  • State dominated the fourth set after gaining the momentum early by going up 9-2 at the jump. The Yellow Jackets kept the Trojans from stringing together more than three points in a row for the remainder of the set. Larisa Lehtoranta was responsible for the match-clinching point with a kill set up by Eggleton.
