WVSU is victorious versus Glenville State on Homecoming

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University football team (3-1, 3-0 MEC) celebrated a resounding 31-21 victory over Glenville State (2-1, 1-1 MEC) under the lights of Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium on Homecoming this Saturday. The Yellow Jackets pulled away from GSU in the second quarter by posting 21 points before they hung on to win it in the second half.

KEY PLAYERS
  • Running back Joel Felder used a strong second half performance to extend his streak of 100-yard rushing games to seven. He rushed 28 times for 120 yards (4.3 yards per carry) and two touchdowns.
  • Quarterback Donovan Riddick was State's second-leading rusher with 12 carries for 85 yards and a score. He also completed 17-of-26 passes for 254 yards and a touchdown.
  • Slot receiver Joe Jones caught three passes for 112 yards, including a 93-yard touchdown reception.
  • Linebackers TJ Lomax and Kameron Vargas each made a team-high 10 tackles.
  • Cornerbacks Nick Blake and Jy Martin both picked off passes. Martin's interception was his third of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both offenses struggled to get going in the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets put points on the board after their first drive of the game stalled at Glenville's 17 yard line. Brennen Schmitt converted the resulting field goal attempt from 34 yards out, 3-0.
  • A Jy Martin interception gave WVSU the ball at Glenville's 29 yard line late in the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets ended up settling for another field goal attempt from 30 yards out this time. Schmitt's kick missed the mark to leave the score as it was going into the second quarter.
  • West Virginia State scored on the second play of its first drive in the second quarter. Riddick linked up with Jones who did most of the work on a 93-yard touchdown strike, 10-0. A quick three-and-out then set up another scoring drive for WVSU. The 77-yard drive's penultimate play was a glorious one-handed grab by Amare Ary for a 34-yard gain. Felder punched the ball into the end zone from one yard out on the next play, 17-0.
  • After the Yellow Jacket defense came up with a stop on fourth and one near midfield, the WVSU offense was able to tack on a third touchdown in the second quarter. Riddick faked a toss before turning upfield and scampering 37 yards into the end zone with a little less than four minutes to go in the first half, 24-0.
  • The Pioneers were finally able to put points on the board on the ensuing drive. They capped the 12-play, 65-yard scoring drive with a three-yard touchdown toss that left 24 seconds on the clock, 24-7.
  • West Virginia State's two offensive series in the third quarter ended with a missed field goal and an interception. Meanwhile, the Pioneers chewed nearly five minutes off the clock with a 12-play, 80-yard drive that resulted in seven points, 24-14. GSU QB Anthony Garrett connected with Zion Barnette on a 32-yard touchdown reception for the third quarter's only score by either team.
  • Riddick was picked off again near the beginning of the fourth quarter. The interception did no harm, however, as Nick Blake intercepted Garrett on the next possession. Blake returned the interception 26 yards to Glenville's 11 yard line. Felder only needed two carries to cross the goal line, 31-14.
  • The wind was taken out of Glenville's sails after Blake's interception. The Pioneers were able to score once more after a blocked punt late in the fourth quarter. Garrett was able to connect with wideout Orion Bonner for a 30-yard touchdown pass on their final offensive series, 31-21. WVSU got the ball back with four minutes remaining in the contest and was able to run the clock out for the win.
EYE-CATCHING STATS
  • The Yellow Jacket defense held Glenville State 278 yards in the game. The WVSU secondary was particularly good, holding the Pioneers to 153 passing yards while coming up with two picks.
  • West Virginia State's offense was explosive with 218 rushing yards and 254 passing yards. The Yellow Jackets have now put up over 450 yards of total offense in 3-of-4 games played this season.
