Volleyball falls to Cal Poly Pomona

HONOLULU – West Virginia State's volleyball team dropped a straight set decision to Cal Poly Pomona in their second of four matches in the Hawai'i Classic. The Yellow Jackets were able to take early leads in all three sets, but the Cal Poly Pomona managed to make several runs in the middle and end of each set to take control.

Diamond'nique Young was the top offensive attacker for the Yellow Jackets, accruing seven slams over the two sets that she played. Kiersten Eggleton had five kills to go with her 13 assists, six digs, two blocks, and a service ace.

State jumped out to a two point lead on two occasions, first at 2-0 then at 4-2, with two slams and a block from Young and a service ace from Eggleton. The Broncos then went on a 12-3 run to take control of the set, 17-9 and ended set one with a 4-0 run. State had seven kills in the set and hit at a .080 clip, compared to the Broncos 17 kills and .538 attacking percentage.

State took the lead early on a 3-0 run, with a kill from Valencia Wilder, a Bronco attack error and a Kaitlyn Cabral service ace. The Yellow Jackets kept set two close all the way to 11-11, but again the Broncos took control with two 4-0 runs, 21-16. The teams then traded points until the Broncos took set two 25-20. The two teams hit almost even with State posting a .375 average and the Broncos hitting .378.

State briefly held the lead in set three at 3-1, but an 11-1 run by the Broncos saw State facing a 12-4 deficit in the blink of an eye. A 4-0 run and a 3-0 run saw the Broncos cruise to the set three victory and take the match.

WVSU will face Hawaii Hilo Saturday, Sept. 2 at 5:00 pm then will take on tournament host Hawaii Pacific at 1:00 am on Sunday, Sept 3.
