Women's Basketball makes NCAA Tournament for first time since 2004

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The West Virginia State University women's basketball team was announced as the No. 5 seed in the Atlantic Region on Selection Sunday for the upcoming NCAA DII Championship. The Yellow Jackets will be appearing in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2004 after tying the school record for wins with a 22-6 overall record.

WVSU will be matched up with the No. 4-seeded Shippensburg Raiders out of the PSAC in the first round of the tournament. Glenville State will host the Atlantic Regional rounds at the Waco Center. West Virginia State's game against Shippensburg will tip-off at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 10th.

The Yellow Jackets ranked first in both scoring offense (91.5 ppg) and rebounds per game (51.3) in all of NCAA Division II this season. They were also ranked in the Top 10 in the nation in assists per game (17.6), free throws made per game (16.4), steals per game (15.5), three pointers per game (9.6), turnover margin (8.04) and turnovers forced per game (26.9). Furthermore, they broke several school records as a team this season including points scored in a single game (124), rebounds in a single game (73) and steals in a single game (29).

A trio of seniors earned all-conference honors this year including Anysa Jordan, Destiny Fields and Shelby Harmeyer. Forwards Anysa Jordan and Destiny Fields posted similar numbers to earn recognition from the league. Jordan averaged 13.9 points per game and 7.0 rebounds per game while Fields averaged 13.7 points per game and 7.1 boards per game. Meanwhile, guard Shelby Harmeyer was the team's three-point specialist with 75 treys made which was fifth-best in the MEC. Her 11.9 points per game was the third-highest scoring average on the team.

Shippensburg finished second in the PSAC's Eastern Division with an 18-4 in-conference record. The Raiders posted the second-best overall record in the league at 24-6 on the season. They are led by Eastern Division Athlete of the Year Ariel Jones. She was the PSAC's leading scorer and averaged 25.2 points per game, almost a full five points more than second-ranked Gannon's Pirosko at 20.3 per game.
