Softball splits with former MEC-foe UVA-Wise in final non-conference games

WISE, Va. – West Virginia State and the University of Virginia College at Wise haven't met on the softball field since UVA-Wise left the Mountain East Conference following the 2019 season. Prior to their departure, the Yellow Jackets had taken six straight from the Cavaliers, only allowing five runs total in the stretch and earning four shutouts. That streak ended today as the former conference foe used a dominating fourth inning of game one to take it 7-2, but the Yellow Jackets bounced back with an eight-run first inning against the Cavaliers and fended off a late rally attempt to take the second-game win, 8-7.

Post-Game Records
WVSU: 9-8
UVA-Wise: 5-21

Game 1: WVSU 2, UVA-Wise 7
UVA-Wise hit a two-RBI double in the first. State had the bases loaded in the next half inning, but the Yellow Jackets hit into three-straight fielder's choices to end the threat.

Kasey Murphy then hit her sixth home run of the season to tie the game at 2-2.

State only got three more hits in the rest of the game, going down in order in both the fifth and sixth innings, meanwhile UVA-Wise scored five runs against the Yellow Jackets in the fifth inning.

It looked like the seventh inning rally could come with a Clarke Moore single, followed by a Chelsea Thompson single, but Autumn Thompson hit into a fielder's choice that cut down Chelsea Thompson at second to end the game and snap the six game winning streak against Wise.

Autumn Thompson took the loss in six innings, striking out four and walking two.

Game 2: WVSU 8, UVA-Wise 7
Five straight Yellow Jackets batters came to the plate and hit singles to load the bases, although Emma Ruth was caught trying to steal second base after her leadoff single. Emma Pauley's single scored Addi Dillow. Clarke Moore then ripped a three RBI triple to clear the bases, 4-0. Contreras singled and made it to third on an UVA-Wise error, and scored Moore, 5-0. Kerrigan Moore ripped a single of her own to score Contreras and advance Hall to third. Dillow doubled in her second at-bat of the inning to bring in Moore and Hall, 8-0.

UVA-Wise got three back in the bottom of the third to chase Hall and bring Murphy in. They scored four more in the seventh inning, all with two outs, but the final Cavalier batter struck out and State came home with the split.

State got 12 base hits in the game with extra base hits coming from Dillow, Hall, and Clarke. Murphy fanned three and walked four in her winning effort. Hall struck out one and walked one in two-and-one-third innings in her start.
