WVSU Women’s Basketball falls short in MEC quarterfinals

WHEELING, W.Va. – West Virginia State's women's basketball team (22-6, 17-5 MEC) was down by as many as nine to the Concord University Mountain Lions (14-16, 9-13 MEC), but they came charging back in the fourth quarter, outscoring Concord by 11 but a three by the Mountain Lions with 1.4 seconds to go forced overtime and ultimately State fell, 86-83.

Destiny Fields led the Yellow Jackets with 21 points and 15 rebounds, securing her fourth double-double of the season. Anysa Jordan scored 18 points, ZZ Russell added 13 and Shelby Harmeyer rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10.

Concord's Abbie Smith led all scorers with 29 points and 15 rebounds.

Destiny Fields scored the first points of the game to give WVSU a brief 2-0 lead. Concord came down and scored six straight to take a 6-2 lead. Harmeyer hit a long-range shot from behind the arc, followed by an Alana Kramer fast break layup to give State the lead back. A couple of minutes later, Destiny Fields hit back-to-back treys prior to the first quarter media timeout, 17-11. Concord scored seven straight to retake the lead, which they continued to the end of the quarter, 22-20. State went cold from the floor for the last five minutes, going 0-10 from the field.

Neither team scored in the opening two minutes of the second quarter. The two teams then traded three baskets each prior to the media timeout. Alana Kramer put the Jackets within two points, 32-30 with 2:17 to play, by Concord ended the quarter on an 8-3 run to put State down 40-33 at the locker room break. WVSU shot 34% from the field and was out-rebounded 31-18 by the Mountain Lions.

Harmeyer drained a trey at the 7:11 mark of the third to start a WVSU 10-0 run, followed by a Fields layup and trey, and a Hannah Shriver layup, forcing Concord to call timeout with WVSU in the lead for the first time since the first quarter, 47-46. Russell went on a fastbreak after picking the pocket of Concord's Jaisah Smith and layed the ball up and in. State then again went cold from the field, allowing Concord to go on a 9-0 run to finish out the quarter, 57-49.

Jordan tied the game up in the fourth quarter with just under six to play at 61-all, then put the Jackets up at 63-61. Concord took a three point lead at the 3:33 mark. Neither team scored for the next two minutes until Fields scored a layup off of a Concord turnover. Anysa Jordan put WVSU back in the lead at 67-66 and Concord was forced to start fouling. State went 6-for-6 from the foul line during the stretch and Concord even missed on an and-one opportunity but a costly tie-up with eight seconds to play allowed Concord to hit a three-pointer with 1.4 seconds to play to force overtime. Russell's shot at the horn was short.

Shriver hit a trey at the 4:13 mark to open the scoring in the extra period, but WVSU again went on a drought that lasted almost two minutes. Concord built a four point lead late in the overtime period and a Russell trey with eight seconds left made it interesting, but there wasn't enough time for State to get a good look and Destiny Fields's game-tying attempt hit off of the front of the iron as the horn sounded.

WVSU will await the decision of the selection committee which will host the selection show on Sunday, March 5 at 10:30 pm.
