West Virginia State goes down to D&E on road

ELKINS, W.Va. – The West Virginia State men's basketball team (16-7, 10-7 MEC) was defeated by Davis & Elkins (14-9, 8-9 MEC) by a final score of 91-82 on Wednesday night at the McDonnell Center.

Junior forwards Malik Whitaker and Anthony Pittman led the Yellow Jackets in scoring with 21 and 18 points respectively. Whitaker made 4-of-6 three-pointers and swiped three steals.

The first half was tight knit with both teams gaining slight leads throughout. In fact, the lead changed 10 times and the score was tied on three occasions.

West Virginia State's largest lead of the opening half came around the 12-minute mark. The Yellow Jackets embarked on a 13-6 run over a five-minute stretch to go up by four, 16-12. Anthony Pittman started the run with a fastbreak layup and capped it with a three-pointer following a steal by Samier Kinsler.

The biggest lead for Davis & Elkins came in the final minute of the first half. A three-point bucket was followed up by a hook shot that landed to give D&E a six-point advantage, 35-29, at halftime.

WVSU spent most of the second half playing catch up. The Yellow Jackets nearly caught up around the 11-minute mark on the heels of a 9-3 run. Malik Whitaker answered a D&E three-pointer with a three of his own to kickstart the slight momentum shift. Kinsler finished it by hitting a jumper to cut the deficit to two points, 56-54.

The Senators then pulled way in front with a 14-2 run over a three-minute span. The result was a 14-point deficit, 70-56,  for State with 7:22 left to play.

The Yellow Jackets fought back with a 15-6 run in which Whitaker and Noah Jordan combined for 13 points. Whitaker knocked down two treys during the stretch. Jordan's trey with a little less than three minutes to go brought WVSU back to within five points, 76-71, of D&E.

Down the home stretch, Davis & Elkins made a couple of easy buckets and converted free throws to hang on to the lead through the final buzzer.

The Senators' high-percentage shooting prevented State's 19 turnovers from making a difference.

WVSU will host West Virginia Wesleyan next on Saturday, Feb. 11th. The tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
