State hits seven jacks in weekend series sweep of Lake Erie

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University baseball team (3-2) swept a three-game series against Lake Erie College (0-6) this weekend at Cal Bailey Field. The Yellow Jackets won a nine-inning game, 8-4, on Saturday before winning both games in a doubleheader (6-5, 8-3) on Sunday.

Game 1: West Virginia State 8, Lake Erie 4 (Final/9)

Senior pitcher Nick Loftis got the start and only gave up one hit through the first three innings. Meanwhile, State's bats came to life early with two runs scored each in the bottom of the second and third.

With two outs in the bottom of the second, designated hitter Connor Fizer homered to left field after Mike Huber reached base with a single to center. Then in the bottom of third, Kyle Waters stole home while Ryan Kay successfully got out of a pickle between first and second base. Catcher Tyler Overaitis proceeded to single down the right field line to score Kay from second, 4-0.

The Storm got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth with an RBI-single before Huber led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot to left center, 5-1. Each team then scored two runs in the fifth inning.

Lake Erie scored two on a double in the gap, 5-3, before Dane Peterson came into pitch to get out of the jam. In the bottom of the inning, William Glick knocked in a run with an infield single. Huber then brought Nathan Paulsen home after Paulsen reached base with a double earlier in the half inning, 7-3.

No runs were scored in the sixth inning. In the seventh, the teams traded runs. The Storm scored on a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh before loading the bases. Tyrus Baumgardner entered the game with two on base and was able to get the third out. The Yellow Jackets were then able to add another insurance run in the bottom of the seventh by scoring on a passed ball, 8-4.

Baumgardner tossed a scoreless eighth inning before Camron Lewis retired the side in order to end the game.

Game 2: West Virginia State 6, Lake Erie 5 (Final/7)

The first game of the doubleheader on Sunday seemed in the bag before it rose to a crescendo.

Junior southpaw Colin Bryant got the start and gave up only two hits in four innings pitched with four strikeouts. He held the Storm scoreless while he was on the mound.

Right fielder Michael Stone broke the deadlock in the second inning with a solo dinger, 1-0. Then after a quick two outs in the bottom of the fourth, the Yellow Jackets rallied to load the bases for Fizer. The best possible outcome for State came next with Fizer hitting a screamer over the left center fence for a grand slam, 5-0.

Following a scoreless fifth inning, Lake Erie got one run back on a balk in the top of the sixth, 5-1. The unthinkable then happened in the top of the seventh. After two quick outs, the bases were loaded up with a single and a pair of walks. Lake Erie's Zimba Cadiz then cleared the bases with the game's second grand slam to tie the score at five-apiece.

Fizer was first up to bat in the bottom of the seventh. His last at bat was a grand slam so he was presented with the opportunity to end the game if he went yard twice. He did just that to clear the State dugout and send the fans in attendance into a frenzy.

Game 3: West Virginia State 8, Lake Erie 3 (Final/7)

The offensive showcase by the Yellow Jackets continued in the second game of the twinbill on Sunday. Junior lefty Chase Norris was solid in a five-inning start in which he only allowed three hits and one earned run.

The Storm scored first this time in the top of the third on a double play ball, 1-0. The lead did not last long as State proceeded to tack on four runs in the bottom of the same inning.

A passed ball scored the first run for WVSU in the bottom of the third. Glick then doubled to right field to score two more runs. Stone drove in the fourth run with a sacrifice fly, 4-1.

In the top of the fifth, Lake Erie closed the gap by scoring on a fielding error, 4-2. In the bottom of the fifth, the Yellow Jackets tacked on three runs with back-to-back jacks. Glick hit a two-run shot to dead center before Stone hit his second solo homerun of the day, 7-2.

An RBI-single by catcher Tyler Overaitis in the bottom of the sixth made it 8-2. Sophomore Riley Vadasz was brought in to pitch and see the game out in the top of the seventh. He allowed a run to score on a groundout before striking out the game's final batter.
