WVSU falls in MEC Championship to Wheeling, 3-1

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State's volleyball team fell in Saturday's Mountain East Championship Match to the Wheeling Cardinals, 3-1. The Yellow Jackets took the first set, but fell in the next three sets. WVSU hit for their lowest hitting percentage of the year in the match, .113.

WVSU falls to 26-5 on the season, while Wheeling advances their record to 25-7.

Diamond'Nique Young had 11 kills for the Yellow Jackets. Ashlynne Davis had 16 digs. Setters Kiersten Eggleton and Peri Martin had 26 and 11 assists, respectively.

The first set was close in the early stages. State held a 6-4 lead but then took six straight points to extend their lead to eight with a pair of kills each from Hannah Steele and Valencia Wilder and a service ace from Peri Martin. Wheeling spent the entirety of the set playing catch up and eventually trimmed the lead to four points late. WVSU took the final three points of the set and took set one 25-18.

Wheeling took five of the first six points in the second set forcing a WVSU timeout. State eventually recovered and tied the set up at 8-all and kept it close through the middle of the set, but suddenly Wheeling hit their stride and racked up the final seven points to take set two 25-16. State hit .000 in the set with eight errors and eight kills.

State hit better in set three but could only manage a .111 percentage and two costly 4-0 runs by the Cardinals put State in an 11 point hole at 24-13. State scored three points before a Wheeling kill ended the third set and put WVSU down 2-1 in the match.

In the do-or-die set WVSU fell behind early and rapidly, eventually being behind 18-5. State tried to make a run, taking five of six points, but the hole was too great and Wheeling closed the match on a 6-2 run, taking the fourth and final set 25-12.

Eggleton and Young were each named to the All-Tournament Team.

The NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Selection Show will air on Monday, Nov. 20th at 7:30 pm and WVSU will be watching to await their fate. The poll that came out prior to the start of the tournament had WVSU at No. 6 in the region.
