WVSU advances to MEC semifinals with 3-1 win over NDC

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State (25-4, 14-1 MEC) dropped the first set of their quarterfinal match to the Notre Dame College Falcons (10-15, 7-7 MEC), but rallied to take the next three sets enroute to a 3-1 victory over the Falcons. WVSU ended up with 14 rejections against the Falcons, including a rare full-front-line block.

MEC First Teammates Jacklyn Simms and Diamond'Nique Young carried the majority of the offensive attack on their shoulders, with Simms's 16 slams and Young's 11. Simms ended up with a double-double on the evening, also contributing 14 digs. Ashlynne Davis started as the backline specialist and led the defensive effort with 26 digs, a season high for the Fresno, Calif. native.

State started the first set quickly on a 5-1 run, but NDC went on a 4-0 run to close the gap. A late 6-1 run by the Falcons gave them the lead permanently in the first set. State closed to within a single point, but NDC took the final two points.

State again opened the following frame on a run, this time 5-0, forcing NDC to use both of their timeouts in the set early. NDC closed to within a point at 8-7 but State answered with another run that NDC was powerless to stop without any timeouts and State extended their lead all the way to 23-13. NDC then went on an 8-1 run to make it 24-21, however a Baby Moleni slam ended any hope of an NDC rally and tie the match up a one set apiece.

The third set opened with runs by each team, a 6-1 run by WVSU followed by a 4-0 run by NDC, then another 6-1 run by WVSU, and finally another 5-0 run by the Falcons. The teams traded blows for the remainder of the set with Simms providing the exclamation point to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

WVSU opened the final stanza on an 11-1 run, eventually extending the lead all the way out to 20-7. WVSU wrapped up the victory with an NDC attack gone long to decisively take the fourth set, 25-10, and the match 3-1.

State will have their semifinal match against West Liberty in the Walker Convocation Center at 5:00 pm on Friday, Nov. 17.
