Football falls to Frostburg under Thursday night lights

FROSTBURG, Md. – West Virginia State football (4-3, 4-2 MEC) fell to Frostburg State (6-1, 5-1 MEC) by a final score of 28-14 on Thursday night at Bobcat Stadium. The Yellow Jacket defense kept the game close until the end while the WVSU offense picked up some steam in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for West Virginia State, the late effort came up short.

TOP JACKETS
  • Defensive back Jy Martin was the game's leading tackler with 11 on the night. He made nine of those tackles on his own.
  • Defensive back Avery Scott picked a pass off in the first quarter and returned it 50 yards to set up State's first touchdown.
  • Running back Joel Felder carried the ball 20 times for 88 yards (4.4 yards per rush) and a score.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The WVSU defense kept the game close in the first quarter with an interception and a forced turnover on downs.
  • The Bobcats struck first with a 65-yard pass completion for a score, 7-0. Wideout Jamil Bishop picked up most of the yardage after the catch.
  • Defensive back Avery Scott picked off Frostburg's quarterback on the Bobcats' next offensive possession and returned the ball to the FSU 12 yard line. Running back Joel Felder made his way into the end zone on the first play of the ensuing drive, 7-7.
  • Frostburg made its way down to State's 10 yard line on the following drive and went for it on fourth and inches. Outside linebacker Jalen Jones exploded through the line of scrimmage and stopped the run in the backfield to force a turnover on downs.
  • The Bobcats scored early in the second quarter with a seven-play, 65-yard drive. The drive ended with Bishop reeling in another touchdown pass from nine yards out this time, 14-7.
  • The first half ended with Frostburg crossing the goal line one more time. A controversial pass interference call in the end zone set up an easy two-yard TD rush for QB Graham Walker, 21-7.
  • The Bobcats attempted a 52-yard field goal midway through the third quarter, but the kick missed the uprights.
  • The third quarter ended with defensive back Nicholas Fannin making a big hit on third down to force a Frostburg punt near midfield.
  • WVSU strung together an 18-play, 83-yard scoring drive on the back of the forced punt. Quarterback Donovan Riddick capped the drive by punching the ball into the end zone from six yards out, 21-14.
  • The Yellow Jacket defense forced a three-and-out after the scoring drive. The WVSU offense took over and made it down to Frostburg's 39 yard line before turning the ball over on downs.
  • The Bobcats regained possession with 3:30 remaining in the contest. A 46-yard rush by Frostburg's Evan Branch on third and five sealed the victory for FSU. They crossed the goal line with a 10-yard run on the next play, 28-14.
