WVSU volleyball rebounds with four set victory over Fairmont State

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – West Virginia State dropped set one, but swept the next three sets, including an extended fourth and final set to take a 3-1 victory over the Fairmont State Falcons on Friday night.

Several Yellow Jackets were in double figures in various stats, headlined by Libero Ashlynne Davis's first career double-double with 22 digs and 10 assists and Kiersten Eggleton's double-double with 29 assists and 17 digs. Eggleton's dig total matched her career-high from 2021.

Concord-transfer Hannah Steele had her first start in a Yellow Jacket uniform and also accumulated a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs, both season highs for the junior.

Natalie Beer led the front liners with 11 total blocks, matching her career high from 2021, and six kills while Diamond'Nique Young slammed 14 kills and nine blocks. Kaitlyn Cabral added 16 digs and eight kills.

State blocked 15 Fairmont State attacks, shattering the previous season high of 11 which came against Hawaii-Hilo and Central State.

The two teams battled in a set of attrition with each side going on runs at various times throughout the frame. With the set tied at 2-2, WVSU ripped off three straight with kills from Young and Jacklyn Simms, followed by a four-score run for the Yellow Jackets that gave State a 9-4 lead on a Davis service ace. The two teams battled back and forth for a few points, but with State holding on to a 14-12 lead, the Falcons hit their stride for six straight, forcing a timeout. State never could regain the momentum as Fairmont State had six set points to close the set and they completed the task on the third attempt.

The second set was a shootout with three ties and seven lead changes between the teams. The largest lead of the match was for Fairmont State at 10-7. Lauren Johnson entered the set with the Yellow Jackets trailing 18-17 then served two straight aces followed by a Moleni and Beer combo block to take a two point lead. The set went to deuce at 23-23, and Young slammed the ball to WVSU set point and a Fairmont State attack error tied the match at one set apiece.

Fairmont State jumped to a 10-6 lead in set three, but State took five straight forcing a Fairmont State timeout. A few points later, State went on a 4-0 run with two kills by Steele and a kill by Young coupled with a Fairmont State attack error to put State up by two, 16-14. Each team scored twice when kills by Young and Cabral followed by a stuff by Baby Moleni and Valencia Wilder gave State six set points and completed the set three win on attempt number four.

The fourth set started with an early 6-0 run for the Yellow Jackets, 8-4. The set stayed close all the way up to WVSU's match point at 24-20 but Fairmont State went on a 4-0 run to cancel match point. State had another match point after a Cabral kill, but Fairmont State tied it back up at 25-all. Cabral gave State another attempt at match point with a slam and Davis fed Moleni to seal the match.

State will take on Frostburg State Saturday afternoon at 2:00 pm to finish up the three-match road trip for the Yellow Jackets.
