BUCKHANNON, W.VA. – The West Virginia State Volleyball team continues to dominate through their 2022 season, picking up their 15
th straight win and sixth consecutive sweep after taking down the Bobcats 25-16, 25-18, 25-18.
The Yellow Jackets hit collectively at a .242 clip while limiting Wesleyan to just .045. Junior
Diamond'Nique Young tallied her 10
th contest with double-digit kills, posting 11 on an incredible .563 hitting efficiency. She added a team-best five blocks.
Sophomore
Ashlynne Davis topped the team with 14 digs, and junior
Peri Martin dished out 14 assists.
The opening stanza was a close-knit contest early, with State holding a narrow two-point lead until a 5-1 run from the Yellow Jackets put them in control 17-11. The squad went on to register another five straight points, including a Davis ace, to widen the gap to 22-12. WVSU sealed the set on a kill from sophomore
Sidney Foster to put State up 1-0 in the match.
Wesleyan led as late as 17-13 in the second set before WVSU went on an 11-point rally in a sequence that featured a pair of kills each from Young and juniors
Kiersten Eggleton and
Jacklyn Simms, a Martin ace, and a block from Young and Simms, to register set point and go on to take the set 25-18 and a 2-0 match advantage.
State cruised in what was ultimately the finale, registering seven straight points to build an 11-3 lead. The Yellow Jackets then added cushion on a
Grace Martin kill, back-to-back Bobcat miscues, and an Eggleton ace to go up 18-7.
Wesleyan attempted to chip away on an 8-2 run to cut State's lead to 21-16, but the Yellow Jackets were able to secure the set and the match after the final four points to take the frame 25-16.
Eggleton finished with nine kills on a .318 clip and dished out nine assists.
Grace Martin posted three kills and added four blocks, and Simms tallied four kills and a pair of blocks.
