Volleyball Returns to Action at WVWC Invite This Weekend

INSTITUTE, W.VA. – After more than a week's of rest, West Virginia State Volleyball returns to the court refreshed and ready, taking on four squads, including a pair of league foes, at the West Virginia Wesleyan College Invitational this weekend in Buckhannon.

The Yellow Jackets enter the weekend 8-1 and on a six-match win streak, including taking 18 straight sets.

THE WEEKEND AHEAD
Friday, Sept. 16- vs. Alderson Broaddus  2 PM
Friday, Sept. 16- vs. Kentucky State  5 PM
Saturday, Sept. 17- vs. Glenville State 10 AM
Saturday, Sept. 17- vs. WVU Tech 4 PM

Junior Diamond'Nique Young leads the way with 104 kills, hitting at a near .500 hitting efficiency at .491. Young also tops the squad in the net game with 29 blocks. Classmate Alex Darby leads the way with 109 digs, and fellow junior Peri Martin has a team-best 134 assists.

SCOUTING THE BATTLERS
AB comes into the weekend on a 2-3 clip, most recently sweeping Salem on the road. Senior Jocie Fisher leads the way with 69 kills, while freshman Zoey Kiefer boasts a team-high seven blocks. The Battlers are led by first-year head coach Julia Erickson after going 6-21 in 2021, their first full-year return to the Mountain East Conference. State swept the Battlers in their meeting last fall in Institute.

SCOUTING THE THOROBREDS
State and Kentucky State faced each other earlier this season, with the Yellow Jackets sweeping KSU commandingly. The team comes in with a 2-10 ledger, picking up their latest win in a 3-1 victory against Central State. Junior Shaska Davis still leads the team in kills with 72 kills and freshman Kendall Washington has an impressive 21 blocks on the year.

SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
Glenville enters the weekend 8-3 and having won nine straight sets, but will face Wesleyan and Kentucky State on Friday before taking on the Yellow Jackets. Katarzyna Nideria leads the Pioneers with 116 kills and 24 blocks. Senior Lindsay Winkler tops with 139 digs. WVSU downed Glenville in straight sets in both meetings a year ago.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN BEARS
West Virginia Tech supports a 3-8 record, but will face Wesleyan and AB Friday before taking on State. Brooklyn Cook has a team-best 70 kills and Coralys Maldonado Rivera carries 18 blocks. The Golden Bears have won just one set in their last five contests.
