BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- West Virginia State University Athletics finished in fifth place in the 2021-22 Mountain East Conference Commissioner's Cup standings when the final rankings were released by the league offices on Wednesday afternoon. After a fourth-place finish in the MEC Commissioner's Cup last year, the Yellow Jackets have now placed in the top five for two consecutive years.

The MEC awards points based on the number of institutions that sponsor a sport. First place receives the number of points equal to the number of teams, last place receives one point. Each institution's points total is then divided by the maximum points possible based on the number of MEC sports sponsored. WVSU earned 66.0 points out of a possible 108 points to achieve a 0.61111 All-Sports Rating.

In the fall, West Virginia State's football, women's soccer and volleyball teams all wrapped up their respective seasons with winning records. The women's soccer team made its first-ever postseason appearance by placing third in the South Division and thereby qualifying for the MEC Tournament. Meanwhile, the volleyball team was crowned MEC regular season champions for the second-straight season and made its first-ever appearance in the MEC Tournament finals. The volleyball team also made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2008 and advanced to the Round of 32 for the first time in school history.

In the winter, the men's and women's basketball programs both achieved winning records at season's end and appeared in the MEC Tournament. The women's basketball team's 18 wins were the most for the program since 2013-14. The men's basketball team's 24 wins were the most for the program since joining the MEC in 2013. The men's side also qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2010 and advanced to the Round of 32 for only the fifth time in school history.

In the spring, both the baseball and softball squads finished with winning records in league play. The baseball team narrowly missed out on postseason play while the softball team extended its streak to four straight seasons with appearances in the MEC Tournament. The women's tennis team put the cherry on top of yet another successful year for WVSU Athletics by winning a NCAA Regional Championship and advancing to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA DII Championship. The women's tennis squad was also named MEC regular season co-champions and made the finals of the MEC Tournament.
