CHARLESTON, W.VA. – In their first meeting since 2019, West Virginia State University and Charleston split their Sunday doubleheader at Welch Athletic Complex, with State winning the opener 1-0 before falling in the finale 4-0.
The Yellow Jackets move to 25-18 on the year, and 17-13 in Mountain East Conference action. Their cross-county rivals sit at 31-15 overall and 23-7 in the league. The 2022 regular season and the series conclude Monday in Institute at Cal Bailey Field.
With a hit in each of Sunday's contests, sophomore Ryan Kay has extended his hitting streak to 14 games. Graduate student Andrew Stone led the way with three hits on the day, including two in the squad's victory.
GAME 1: WVSU 1, UC 0
Starter Nick Loftis tossed his first shutout of the season, and State's third of the year, in a gem performance, scattering just four hits and a pair of walks in a complete game victory. He also struck out four. He moves to 7-4 on the season.
Freshman Nathan Paulsen scored the critical run for State, breaking through in the top of the fourth. After a leadoff single to center field, he advanced two bases on a connection from Kay. Kay then went to steal second, and Paulsen capitalized on a throwing miscue from the Golden Eagles' catcher and crossed home.
Paulsen, along with Stone, tallied two hits on the day.
GAME 2: WVS
Doubles proved to be detrimental for the Yellow Jackets in the finale, as UC scored four runs through five frames, with three coming by way of a double.
After a leadoff single in the fourth, the Golden Eagles used their first double to advance two bases, and then a second double in the inning brought in two runs.
Charleston scored twice more in the fifth, again coming via double.
The Yellow Jackets were held to just four hits, with freshman Dante Zamudio doubling. Kay, Stone, and classmate Matthew Kline each singled during the contest.

State hosts the Golden Eagles for a Monday matinee doubleheader to conclude the 2022 regular season at Cal Bailey Field. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m., and live stats and video will be provided for both games. The Yellow Jackets will honor their seniors and graduate students before the first contest.
