WHEELING, W.VA. – West Virginia State Baseball delivered a thrilling extra-inning victory in their opening contest with Mountain East Conference foe Wheeling Sunday at the JB Chambers I-470 Complex, winning 6-2 before falling in the finale 3-1.
State now sits at 11-12 on the year and 4-8 in conference play, while Wheeling moves to 11-16 on the season and 7-5 in conference play.
GAME 1: WVSU 6, WHEELING 2 (8 INNINGS)
The Yellow Jackets plated four runs in the eighth to take home the win in their first extra-innings contest of the season, with graduate student Andrew Sharp scoring the go-ahead after a leadoff single to left field.
A pair of walks to classmate Andrew Stone and junior Trey Junkins loaded the bases, and then a passed ball brought Sharp home. State added cushion after another single to left field- this one courtesy of senior Brett Christian, brought in Stone.
Enter freshman Nathan Paulsen, who drove home two on a hard infield single to seal the 6-2 mark.
Wheeling took an early 2-0 advantage, scoring twice in the second inning off a pair of doubles. WVSU cut the lead in half the following frame, after catcher Dylan Ball reached via error to begin the inning, and then scored on a single from senior Michael Stone.
State tied the contest in the sixth, after Junkins singled to right field and graduate student Matthew Kline doubled him home.
Kline and sophomore Ryan Kay each tallied two hits in the contest, and freshman Quincy Thornton earned the victory, tossing seven innings with five strikeouts. He moves to 2-1 on the season.
GAME 2: WVSU 1, WHEELING 3
State attacked first, plating a run in the top of the second after Sharp reached on a Cardinals miscue and scored on a RBI groundout from Junkins.
The lead was short lived, as Wheeling tied the contest the bottom of the inning on a homerun.
The Cardinals then added a run in each the fifth and sixth innings to take the lead and secure the 3-1 victory.
The Yellow Jackets tallied just four hits in the contest, but starter Chase Norris was impressive with seven punch outs across 5.2 innings of work.
