WVSU Men's Tennis Edges Union (N.Y.), 4-3

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The West Virginia State University men's tennis team edged Union College (N.Y.), 4-3, in its first match at the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) Spring Tennis Fest on Monday.

Both No. 1 doubles and No. 2 doubles were won by WVSU to claim the doubles point. Alex Cottrell and Mateo Flores won 6-1 in the No. 1 pairing before Paulo Gutierrez and Elias Valencia claimed a 6-2 victory in the No. 2 pairing.

Ryan Mullins was the first to finish off his opponent in No. 3 singles with a 6-3, 6-3 result. Next came Elias Valencia at No. 4 singles with a 6-2, 6-3 finish. 

Paulo Gutierrez's tie-breaking win against Union's Cameron Kooper ultimately earned the team victory for West Virginia State. Gutierrez narrowly lost the first set, 4-6, before he claimed the second set easily, 6-2. He battled in the tie-breaking third set and came out on top, 10-6.

Both Cottrell and Flores also forced third sets at No. 1 and No. 5 singles, respectively.
