Win Streak Snapped for Women's Basketball at Hands of No. 1 Glenville

INSTITUTE, W.VA. – West Virginia State University Women's Basketball snapped a six-game win streak Monday, suffering a 103-77 defeat in Walker Convocation to the number one team in the country, Mountain East Conference foe Glenville State.

The Yellow Jackets slip to 17-6 on the season and 13-5 in league action, while the Pioneers remain perfect at 23-0 (17-0).

State was led by a trio juniors on the scoring front, with Hannah Shriver topping the squad with 19 points. Destiny Fields tallied her first double-double of the year with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Shelby Harmeyer added 12 points.

The Pioneers controlled the tempo of the opening frame, going on an 18-8 run for over five minutes of the first quarter, building a lead as high as 10 points at 28-18, and ended the frame with a 30-21 advantage.

The Yellow Jackets found favor in the charity stripe to open the second quarter, as Fields and sophomore guard ZZ Russell each made good on a pair of free throws, trimming the gap to just a five-point deficit at 30-25. State continued to chip away throughout the quarter, but the Pioneers maintained the lead, again going as high as 10 points at 44-34.

After a Fields layup, Shriver banked a free throw and a jumper to again cut the lead to just five points at 44-39 with just three minutes remaining in the half. From that point, Glenville surged to a 13-4 scoring drive, closing out the half with a 57-43 advantage.

Shriver put up 13 points in the half and freshman Emyah Fortenberry pulled down five boards. State shot at nearly 50% from the floor for both the first two quarters, going 14-for-29.

Glenville used a 7-0 run through the third quarter to build over a 20-point lead, which they held for the duration of the frame, ending the quarter 80-59.

Despite the deficit, Fields was sharp, registering eight points during the term.

Top-ranked Glenville went on to retain their perfect record after hauling in 22 points in the fourth quarter, finalizing the score at 103-77.
