Women’s basketball escapes comeback bid by MEC top-ranked Fairmont State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State nearly coughed up a 21-point halftime lead, but used a huge rebounding edge and a 60% shooting effort from the field in the fourth quarter to send the Falcons flying back north with the five point loss.

Twelve different Yellow Jackets (6-1, 3-1 MEC) contributed points and Freshman Emily Anthony paced the WVSU lineup with 13 points while Hannah Shriver and Destiny Fields each contributed double-digit performances with 10 points each. Emyah Fortenberry contributed 11 rebounds. Alyssa DeAngelo led all scorers for Fairmont State (5-2, 3-1 MEC) with 21 points. WVSU out rebounded Fairmont State 50-32 and had 23 offensive rebounds. WVSU hit 21-24 shots from the free throw line while Fairmont State converted just 18-of-29 attempts.

WVSU jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead, but a Fairmont State trey closed the gap to 4-3 just before FSU called timeout leading to an early media timeout. The two teams traded points until the 4:25 mark when another FSU trey gave them their second lead of the game at 13-10. WVSU then ripped off a 16-2 run with seven different Yellow jackets scoring. Shelby Harmeyer and Ashley Davis both hit a trey. WVSU hit 9-of-10 from the free throw line, while Fairmont State had just one trip on an and-one opportunity. State led at the break 29-17.

The WVSU defense was suffocating in the second period, forcing eight Falcon turnovers leading to 11 fast break points and folding Fairmont State to zero. Caroline Scott accounted for three steals by herself leading to points or fouls on each of the three succeeding possessions. A 13-4 run by the Yellow Jackets over half of the second period helped lead WVSU to a 51-30 halftime lead, leaving all in attendance in the Walker Center to wonder what just happened.

Fairmont's comeback bid started immediately coming out of the locker room, when the Falcons caught the Yellow Jackets napping and put together a 10-2 run through the first three minutes of the quarter. Fairmont shot 80% during the pan, while the Jackets hit just one of their five shots. The Yellow Jackets saw their lead cut to as low as six but an Anysa Jordan layup and an Anthony bomb to close out third quarter scoring kept the double-digit lead intact at 65-54. State shot just 29.4% from the field in the quarter.

State and Fairmont traded blows through the fourth quarter media timeout and down to the three minute mark of the game, but then Fairmont State put together a late 12-4 run to cut the WVSU lead to a single point, 86-85 but ZZ Russell and Fortenberry each hit two foul shots to seal the game and the upset for WVSU. State shot 8-of-13 in the fourth quarter and was a perfect 3-for-3 from long range and 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. They outrebounded Fairmont State 10-4 but committed nine turnovers to Fairmont State's one.
