Yellow Jackets wrap up 2022 with a convincing win over Salem

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University women's basketball team (8-2, 4-2 MEC) defeated Salem (4-10) with ease by a final score of 86-64 on Monday afternoon at the Walker Convocation Center. The Yellow Jackets outscored the Tigers in 3-of-4 quarters and held the lead for all but one minute of the contest.

Forward Anysa Jordan led her team in scoring with 16 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Destiny Fields and Caroline Scott both also scored in double-digits with 13 and 11 points respectively. Guard Hannah Shriver tied her career-high with 10 assists while posting eight points.

West Virginia State forced the Tigers to take their first timeout with 5:46 remaining in the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets scored 10 unanswered leading up to the timeout to take a 16-7 lead. Hannah Shriver capped the run with back-to-back treys and even grabbed the defensive rebound in between.

After a fast start to the game, both teams tapered off in the remaining minutes of the opening period. WVSU barely outscored Salem, 4-3, in the last five minutes to carry a 10-point advantage, 20-10, into the second quarter.

The opening four minutes of the second quarter was played to a 9-9 split. Around the six-minute mark, Anysa Jordan kicked off a 12-6 run that lasted until the halftime buzzer. She scored half of the Yellow Jackets' points during the stretch. Caroline Scott ended the run with a buzzer-beating three courtesy of a bullet pass from Shriver. WVSU then went into the locker room with a 16-point cushion, 41-25.

The second half started with a three-minute long scoring drought. The Tigers finally ended the drought by making a layup with 6:55 left in the third stanza. A single free throw was then made by Salem before the midway commercial timeout to cut the lead to 13 points, 41-28.

Play picked up after the media break with Shelby Harmeyer knocking down a three-pointer to end State's scoring drought. She hit another shot from behind the arc less than 30 seconds later to keep Salem from catching up. Both teams then started making shots as the clock wound down in the third quarter with the Tigers able to shrink the lead to 11 points, 56-45.

The Yellow Jackets flipped the momentum at the beginning of the fourth quarter by going on an 11-3 run. Felesia Ondongo uncharacteristically nailed a three-point shot to spark the run. Alana Kramer finished it with a sweet hook shot to put WVSU up by 17, 67-50, with 5:45 remaining in the contest.

All that was left for West Virginia State to do was see out the game. The Yellow Jackets did more than that as they increased the gap to 24 points, 86-62, after a pair of three-pointers were made by Ashley Davis and Emily Anthony towards the conclusion of the game. Salem made one last shot in the closing seconds to give the game its final score, 86-64.

WVSU will start the new year with a non-conference road game at Bluefield State on Monday, Jan. 2nd. The tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
