No. 25 WVSU remains undefeated with sixth-straight win at Frostburg

FROSTBURG, Md. – The No. 25 West Virginia State University men's basketball team (6-0, 3-0 MEC) won its sixth-straight game at Frostburg State (3-4, 1-2 MEC) by a final score of 100-85 on Wednesday night at Bobcat Arena. The Yellow Jackets shot 58 percent from the field and 44 percent from behind the arc to come away with a convincing victory and remain undefeated on the season.

Junior forward Malik Whitaker was the game's leading scorer and rebounder with a season-high 26 points and 11 boards. This was his third double-double of the season. Sophomore guard Samier Kinsler posted 19 points in 21 minutes on the court to maintain his high scoring average. Meanwhile, junior forward Noah Jordan returned to form in his second game back from injury with 13 points, six rebounds and two blocks.

The Yellow Jackets struggled to score in the opening five minutes of the contest and fell behind quickly to Frostburg. The Bobcats hit a three-pointer at the 15-minute mark to take a 15-6 lead and leave a tough task for WVSU to close the gap.

West Virginia State was indeed up to the task and gradually chipped away at the lead over the next five minutes. Miguel Martinez knocked down a trey to pull back within four points, 22-18, before a jumper by FSU extended the differential to six, 24-18, around the midway point.

The remaining nine-and-a-half minutes all went State's way. Frostburg's six-point lead was relinquished after WVSU scored 10 unanswered during a three-minute stretch to go up by four, 28-24. Aboubacar Cisse fueled the shift in momentum with six points, a steal and an offensive rebound during the tide-turning run.

In the final five minutes of the first half, the Yellow Jackets continued to roll and outscored the Bobcats, 18-9. Taevon Horton dropped in two shots from behind the arc in the closing minutes of the opening half while Noah Jordan added a three-pointer of his own. Dwaine Jones then nailed a step back jumper with 13 seconds to go to give WVSU a 13-point advantage, 46-33, at the break.

Frostburg started out hot again in the second half and cut the lead to five points, 46-41, after scoring eight unanswered in the opening two minutes. The Bobcats cooled off after the short spurt while State shoveled coal into the furnace.

The Yellow Jackets went on a dominant 20-5 run over the ensuing six minutes to bury FSU by 20 points, 66-46. WVSU shot 8-of-9 from the floor, 2-of-3 from three-point range and 2-of-2 from the free throw line during the run. Jordan sparked the run with a dunk and Jones capped it with a trey.

Frostburg scored seven unanswered before the 10-minute mark to reduce the lead to 13 points, 66-53. Play then finally started to even out over the remaining 10 minutes of the game. Jordan hit another three-pointer before the final media timeout to give WVSU a 16-point cushion, 84-68, to defend in the last few minutes of the contest.

West Virginia State matched the Bobcats shot-for-shot in the final five minutes to reach triple-digits for the second time this season. Samier Kinsler picked up 11 of his points in the closing minutes to help his team finish off FSU.

The Yellow Jackets will face their toughest test of the season against No. 12 Fairmont State on Saturday, Dec. 3 next. The Falcons are also undefeated and coming off a 74-61 win versus Charleston. State will have home court advantage for the 4 p.m. clash of MEC titans.
