Men’s Basketball uses three-point shooting to dominate Glenville State on the road

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University men's basketball team (3-0, 1-0 MEC) routed the Glenville State University Pioneers inside the Waco Center on Saturday, coming away with a 114-90 victory in the Mountain East opener for both squads.

The Yellow Jackets hit 57 percent of their shots from long-distance, including a scorching 7-of-10 in the second half. The Pioneers managed just 30 percent. West Virginia State took 49 shots from the charity stripe, which is tied for second-most in a single game in MEC history.

WVSU scored 15 unanswered points during a two-and-a-half minute stretch in the opening five minutes. Samier Kinsler knocked down two three-pointers during the dominant run before Dwaine Jones capped it with a trey of his own. West Virginia State led 19-5 at the end of the stretch.

The play evened out until the Yellow Jackets went on another run with six minutes to go. This time, they scored eight unanswered over a two-minute period to go up by 17 points, 41-24.

The momentum continued to favor WVSU through halftime.  When the buzzer sounded to signal the break, West Virginia State held a 15-point advantage, 54-39, over the Pioneers.

The Yellow Jackets put on a shooting clinic in the first half. They shot 55 percent from the floor, 46 percent from three-point range and 68 percent from the free throw line.

West Virginia State continued to roll in the second half. By the second media timeout around the nine-minute mark, WVSU increased its advantage to 20 points, 85-65. Taevon Horton went off in the opening 10 minutes of the first half with 15 points to his name.

The Yellow Jackets grabbed their largest lead to that point, 92-67, with seven minutes remaining in the contest. Ibn Loyal completed a four-point play before Aboubacar Cisse made both of his free throws to extend the gap.

The lead briefly dipped below 20 with a Glenville runout and a layup, with just over four minutes to play, but Miguel Martinez buried his third trey of the game with 3:19 showing on the clock to make it a 22-point margin. Glenville wouldn't get any closer than 20 for the remainder of the game.

The balanced offense for the Yellow Jackets continued with six players scoring in double figures. Taevon Horton led the charge with 19 points, shooting 6-of-7 from the field, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc and 4-of-6 from the free throw line. Ibn Loyal collected his first double-double of his WVSU career with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

West Virginia State scored 23 points on fast breaks compared to Glenville State's seven.

Glenville State's Jamarvious Jones led all scorers with 22 points.
