Seven football players earn all-conference recognition from the MEC

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University football team placed seven of its players on the 2022 All-Mountain East Conference shortlist when the awards were announced on Tuesday evening. Among the recipients for the Yellow Jackets were quarterback Donovan Riddick, wide receiver Barry Hill, offensive lineman Andres Sagastume, running back Joel Felder, kick returner Quientin Williams, defensive lineman Corlyn Witcher and linebacker Jalen Jones.

Quarterback Donovan Riddick received All-MEC Second Team honors after throwing for the third-most yards (2,326) and second-most touchdowns (20) in the league. His 63.4 completion percentage and 20-to-6 touchdown-to-interception ratio were both second-best in the conference. He also led all quarterbacks in the MEC with 499 rushing yards and added seven touchdowns to his season totals on the ground.

Wide receiver Barry Hill also received All-MEC Second Team honors as West Virginia State's leading wideout with 590 yards and eight touchdown receptions. His 19.0 yards per catch average was the third-highest mark in the league. He topped 100 receiving yards in four games this season.

Offensive lineman Andres Sagastume made the All-MEC Second Team for the first time in his career. He was awarded an All-MEC Honorable Mention following his freshman campaign two seasons ago. He started 10 games this season for a team that led the league in rushing with 2,285 yards on the year.

Running back Joel Felder earned an All-MEC Honorable Mention after leading the Yellow Jackets in both rushing yards (859) and touchdowns (8). His 6.6 yards per carry was the best average in the league and his 95.4 yards per game was the fourth-highest average in the conference. He rushed for over 100 yards on four occasions this year.

Quientin Williams was awarded All-MEC Honorable Mention status for his kick returning abilities. His 27.0 yards per kickoff return was the third-best mark in the MEC. He returned one kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown this season. Williams also caught 23 passes for 265 yards and two scores in his freshman campaign.

Defensive lineman Corlyn Witcher was the recipient of an All-MEC Honorable Mention after recording 54 total tackles, including 3.5 sacks, throughout the year. He also hurried the quarterback twice and forced a fumble.

Linebacker Jalen Jones was the other recipient of an All-MEC Honorable Mention from the WVSU defense. He registered 53 total tackles on the season, including 7.5 tackles-for-loss and 3.5 sacks. Jones also hurried the quarterback twice and made one interception.
