WVSU comes up a point short at Glenville, 31-30

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University football team (5-4, 4-4 MEC) came up one point short, 31-30, to Glenville State (5-4, 4-4 MEC) on Saturday afternoon at I.L. & Sue Morris Stadium. The Yellow Jackets took the lead for the first time in the third quarter, but let it slip in the fourth.

Junior wideout Barry Hill caught three passes for 100 yards and a touchdown. This was his second-consecutive 100-yard receiving game and third on the season. Meanwhile, sophomore tailback Joel Felder rushed 20 times for 101 yards (5.1 yards per carry) and a score. This was his second 100-yard rushing game of the year.

The Pioneers scored first with an 11-play, 75-yard drive that resulted in a touchdown. The drive started with a 35-yard pass completion to Zay Huff. The running game was mostly responsible for picking up the next 40 yards to cross the goal line with seven minutes left in the opening quarter, 7-0.

After a quick three-and-out by WVSU, Glenville started another scoring drive near midfield with another 35-yard pass completion. The second play of the drive was a 22-yard rush by quarterback Anthony Garrett for a touchdown, 14-0.

West Virginia State received the ensuing kickoff with around five minutes to go in the first quarter. Running back Joel Felder was able to keep the drive alive with a 10-yard rush to the GSU 43 on third-and-nine. The next play was a touchdown strike from quarterback Donovan Riddick to wideout Barry Hill. Three minutes remained after the PAT was converted, 14-7.

The Pioneers made a fourth down conversion from one yard out on their own 33 yard line to keep the following drive going. They made it down to the WVSU 19 yard line before being held up by the Yellow Jacket defense. The field goal unit was eventually brought out for a 38-yard attempt that hit the mark, 17-7, with 13:31 left in the second quarter.

After a fourth down stop by the WVSU defense, the Yellow Jackets took over from the GSU 48 with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. The drive almost stalled at the GSU 30, but Riddick scrambled for a first down on fourth-and-four. Felder ended up breaking the plane from five yards out, 17-14, after a 14-yard reception by Hill. Three minutes came off the clock from the start of the possession.

Following a kickoff return to the 50 yard line, the Pioneers were able to make it to the WVSU 12 before the field goal unit was forced onto the field again. The 29-yard attempt missed the mark with 3:37 remaining in the opening half.

Neither offense was able to get anything going after the missed field goal to keep the score unchanged, 17-14 in favor of Glenville, at halftime.

West Virginia State scored first in the second half to take the lead for the first time in the game. Riddick hooked up with Hill again for a 43-yard gain down to the GSU 2 yard line. Tavis MvAdoo punched the ball in for the score, 21-17, at the 12-minute mark in the third quarter.

The lead did not last long with the Pioneers scoring on the first play of the next drive. Garrett linked up with wide receiver Javian Bellamy for a 73-yard touchdown reception to put Glenville back in front, 24-21.

The Yellow Jackets tied the game on the ensuing drive. A fourth down conversion near midfield and a 21-yard pass completion to wideout Quientin Williams set up a 40-yard field goal attempt. Kicker Brennen Schmitt nailed the field goal from distance, 24-24, with six-and-a-half minutes left in the third stanza.

After another fourth down stop by the WVSU defense, the Yellow Jackets were able to execute on a 10-play, 79-yard touchdown drive. All 79 yards were picked up by the legs of Riddick and running back Tavis McAdoo. Riddick ended up crossing the goal line from three yards out with about 30 seconds to go in the third quarter. The extra point was blocked, 30-24.

The fourth quarter was scoreless until the six-minute mark when the Pioneers decided to go for it on fourth-and-four from the WVSU 34 yard line. Garrett found a wide open Bellamy for a TD connection to go up by a single point, 31-30.

Riddick was picked off on the third play of the ensuing drive. Glenville was then able to run out the clock after converting on fourth down from the WVSU 35 yard line. A costly offsides penalty by the Yellow Jackets made the conversion five yards easier.  The Pioneers made it down to the one yard line on the final possession of the contest before being able to line up in victory formation.

The Yellow Jackets rushed for 224 yards in the game, but only threw for 188 yards with two interceptions. Glenville rushed for 194 yards and threw for 301 yards without a pick. The Pioneers also made 4-of-6 fourth down conversions.

WVSU will return to Institute on Saturday, Nov. 5th to host West Liberty on Senior Night. The last home game of the season will take place under the lights of Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium with a 6 p.m. kickoff.
