West Virginia State pulls away late at Frostburg for win No. 12

FROSTBURG, Md. – The West Virginia State University women's basketball team (12-5, 8-4 MEC) defeated Frostburg State (3-16, 2-11 MEC), 93-75, at the Bobcat Arena on Saturday afternoon. The game was close until midway through the fourth quarter when West Virginia State scored 16 unanswered to pull away from the pesky Bobcats.

Four Yellow Jackets scored in double-digits including Destiny Fields (18), ZZ Russell (16), Hannah Shriver (15), and Alana Kramer (12). Frostburg State's leading scorer was held to just 13 points in comparison.

The Yellow Jackets and Bobcats went back-and-forth through the first two minutes of the contest. Then around the 7:30-mark, West Virginia State picked up steam with a 13-2 run that lasted until the game's first media timeout. Five WVSU players contributed to the scoring effort, including Alana Kramer and Shelby Harmeyer with three-point buckets. The Yellow Jackets led by 12, 20-8, at the end of the two-and-a-half-minute stretch.

Frostburg State closed the gap with a 9-2 run over the next four minutes. Caroline Scott's second-chance layup in the final minute of the first quarter created a seven-point advantage, 24-17, for West Virginia State going into the second period.

The first five minutes of the second stanza was played evenly with West Virginia State's advantage only being whittled to six points, 34-28. The Bobcats then scored seven unanswered over the following two minutes to take the lead, 35-34.

That lead grew to three points, 39-36, with 46 seconds remaining until halftime. ZZ Russel managed to take the lead back for her team with a floating jumper before a buzzer-beating layup off a steal by Scott. WVSU subsequently went into the locker room up by one, 40-39.

The Yellow Jackets quickly ended up in foul trouble with six called against them in the opening five minutes of the third quarter. Despite giving the Bobcats an advantage by putting them in the bonus early, West Virginia State did not allow the game to slip away.

The chippy third period ended with 16 total fouls called and was still won by WVSU, 22-19. Thanks to an incredible display of composure under pressure, the Yellow Jackets strutted into the fourth stanza with a four-point edge, 62-58.

The Bobcats lost their composure with five fouls called against them in the first four minutes of the final quarter. After being handed the bonus, West Virginia State finally gained some separation.

With the score tied at 70-apiece, WVSU went on to sink 7-of-7 free throws and drill three shots from behind the arc without a response from Frostburg. The Yellow Jackets seized a comfortable 16-point cushion, 86-70, with around three minutes to go after the game-deciding run.

Frostburg State did not stand a chance after the late momentum swing as West Virginia State was able to cruise to its 12th victory of the season.

The Yellow Jackets' 28 points off turnovers and 21 made free throws put them over the top.

WVSU will head to Davis & Elkins next on Monday, Jan. 31st for another MEC clash. The rescheduled contest is set to tip-off at 6 p.m.
