WVSU extends win streak to eight games with a commanding victory at UC

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University men's basketball team (13-5, 8-3 MEC) comfortably defeated crosstown rivals Charleston (12-3, 8-2 MEC), 86-75, at the Wehrle Innovation Center on Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets extended their win streak to eight games with the victory over the conference-leading Golden Eagles.

Glen Abram and Anthony Pittman did the majority of the scoring for West Virginia State with 30 and 23 points, respectively.

Through the opening ten minutes of the game, neither team was able to pull away from the other or hit a high percentage of their shots for that matter. Jeremiah Moore rolled in a layup and made the most of a UC turnover with a slam dunk on the other end of the court to give his team a slim advantage,13-12, at the midway point of the first half.

Baskets were traded by the rivals over the ensuing three minutes so that the one-point differential remained intact, now 20-19 in favor of WVSU. The Yellow Jackets then took charge and were absolutely dominant in the last seven minutes of the opening stanza.

West Virginia State outscored Charleston, 24-10, to close out the first period. WVSU shot 10-of-13 from the floor, including four three-pointers, and forced three turnovers to take a commanding 15-point lead, 44-29, into halftime. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles were held to a 40 percent field goal percentage during the last seven minutes of the opening half.

Charleston gained some steam after the break with a 10-4 run over the first five-and-a-half minutes of the second half. Nevertheless, the Yellow Jackets were still ahead by nine points, 48-39, after the slight UC surge.

West Virginia State halted Charleston's momentum there and went on a 15-7 run over a four-minute stretch to take charge once again. Glen Abram was responsible for 11 of the points scored on the run that grew the lead back to double-digits, 67-49, with 8:28 remaining in the contest.

The Yellow Jackets kept a double-figure advantage over their rivals through the final buzzer. The Golden Eagles went on multiple short-lived runs in the last eight minutes that were continually nullified by State. By the final whistle, WVSU had held the lead for approximately 32 minutes of the game.

West Virginia State shot 66 percent from the floor and 42 percent from three-point range. In comparison, Charleston shot 45 percent from the field and 30 percent from behind the arc.

WVSU will return to the Walker Convocation Center for its next game against nationally-ranked Fairmont State on Wednesday, Jan. 26th. The tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
