BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- West Virginia State University women's soccer player
Fran Soares-Cupertino was named the Mountain East Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday afternoon. She was the top scorer for the Yellow Jackets in two games played last week, including a 3-2 win over Davis & Elkins on Thursday and a 1-0 victory at West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday.
Soares-Cupertino started off the week by giving West Virginia State a much-needed lift after going down by a goal against the Senators. She scored four minutes after D&E went up 1-0 to tie the game and then gave the Yellow Jackets the lead, 2-1, by scoring again seven minutes later. Her second goal would've been the game winner if Davis & Elkins didn't score a conciliatory goal in the 79th minute.
Soares-Cupertino did score the game winner on the road in Sunday's match at West Virginia Wesleyan. She headed a ball into the bottom left corner of the goal in the 76th minute to ensure that WVSU added three more points to its tally in the league table.
