Mattie Best Reinstated as Head Softball Coach at WVSU

5/21/2021 11:25:00 AM

INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- The West Virginia State University Athletic Department announced Mattie Best's reinstatement as the Head Softball Coach on Friday afternoon. Best was a four-year starter for the Yellow Jackets from 2011-2014, an assistant coach from 2015-2017, and the head coach of the softball program from 2017-2019.

"During her tenure as head coach, WVSU Softball competed at the highest level, achieving MEC championships and NCAA appearances," remarked Athletic Director Nate Burton. "I am thrilled to welcome Mattie back to WVSU and I look forward to working with her again."

Best returns to lead the softball program after a one-year hiatus from the post. Prior to the 2020 season being cut short, she posted a 70-38 overall record through two full seasons at the helm.

In her first season as head coach, the Yellow Jackets captured their first-ever MEC Tournament championship. In her second season in charge, West Virginia State claimed its first-ever MEC South Division title. Both seasons saw the Yellow Jackets reach the NCAA Atlantic Region 2 Tournament. In 2019, they finished runners-up to West Chester in the regional tournament.

"I am excited to be at the helm of West Virginia State University Softball program once again," said Best.  "I can't wait for the fall to get after it with such a talented and successful team.

"I want to thank Nate Burton and WVSU for allowing me to come home and lead this astounding program."

Best will look to pick up where she left off as she readies the softball program for the 2022 campaign. She takes over a squad that finished with the best in-conference record at the conclusion of the regular season and was one win away from being crowned MEC Tournament champions in 2021.
