FOOTBALL STINGS GLENVILLE STATE, 37-27

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – West Virginia State football (2-1) picked up its second win of the hybrid Mountain East Conference season, stinging Glenville State 37-27 Saturday at Morris Stadium.

Senior quarterback Donovan Riddick tallied 266 total yards and accounted for two touchdowns. Classmate Dustin Crouser registered a game-high 11 tackles, including nine solo and fellow veteran Dant'e Jones scored twice on 88 rushing yards.

The offensive upsurge started quickly for State, who found the end zone on just their second play of their initial possession of the game courtesy of play caller Riddick's 64-yard rush to open the scoring.

The Yellow Jackets doubled their lead in exciting fashion, as junior cornerback Paul Sanchez forced a Pioneer fumble at their own nine yard line, recovered and scored to put WVSU up 14-0.

Glenville State found the end zone to cut the lead in half, but just five seconds into the second quarter, the Yellow Jackets were back on the board, reaping the benefits of a 73-yard, 6-play drive as Jones took a five-yard trot into the pay dirt and put State up 21-7.

Back-to-back TDs for the Pioneers evened the contest heading into halftime, but Jones took the role of playmaker to open the third quarter, totaling 34 yards on WVSU's opening third quarter drive to boost the Yellow Jackets to 28-21.

Riddick connected a 40-yard launch to rookie wide receiver Barry Hill to put State up 34-21, and WVSU closed out the quarter, and their scoring, on a field goal from senior kicker Martin Ahlstroem.

Hill finished the day with 144 yards on six receptions.

The Yellow Jackets return to the gridiron for their MEC finale, facing cross-town rivals Charleston Saturday April 10. Kickoff is slated for noon.
