BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University volleyball team won its fifth-straight match with a sweep of West Virginia Wesleyan on Friday night, 3-0. West Virginia State's sweep of the Bobcats was its second in a row and counted as the third road victory for the Yellow Jackets in a four-day span.
WVSU progress to 7-1 in the Mountain East Conference with the win while WVWC regresses to 5-3 in the MEC with the loss.
Junior outside hitter Jenna Dufrense was the game's leading points-getter with 18, including 17 kills and two block assists. She also shoveled a team-high 13 digs to prove her defense is as strong as her offense. Junior middle blocker Gabrielle Thompson was front and center with a game-high seven block assists. She also added five kills with a .625 hitting percentage. Freshman Peri Martin continued to perform her duties well by leading all players with 34 assists.
The first set was dead even until the score reached 17 apiece. The next five points then all went to West Virginia State due to a series of errors by West Virginia Wesleyan with a Thompson kill sandwiched in between, 22-17. Points were traded back-and-forth over the next four rallies before a Dufresne kill awarded the opening set to the Yellow Jackets, 25-19.
The second set was played to a 22-all draw. Three consecutive kills by the Yellow Jackets, two from Dufresne and one by Peri Martin, ultimately put the second away, 25-22.
The third set was another seesaw affair with three-to-four-point swings going both ways. The last big swing of momentum was the result of two attack errors committed by WVWC that were bookended by a pair of Dufresne kills, 21-15. Four of the last six rallies resulted in points for WVSU to claim the final set for the Yellow Jackets, 25-17. Once again, the Martin sisters combined for the match-clinching point with Peri setting up Grace for the kill.
West Virginia State registered 13 total blocks on the night compared to only four by West Virginia Wesleyan.
The Yellow Jackets will finally return home for their next contest against Davis & Elkins (4-1) on Tuesday, March 2. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
