WVSU returns to winning ways versus West Virginia Wesleyan, 104-92

INSTITUTE, W. Va.-  The West Virginia State University men's basketball team edged out a victory against West Virginia Wesleyan, 104-92, on Saturday afternoon at the Walker Convocation Center.

West Virginia State improves to 7-5 overall and in the MEC while West Virginia Wesleyan regresses to 0-13 overall and in league play.

Senior guard Glen Abram had a historic night. He set modern-era school records for three-point field goals made (12), field goals made (14), and points scored (47) in a single game. Sophomore forward Anthony Pittman added another double-double to his season totals with 14 points and 18 rebounds. Junior forward Jihad Shockley contributed eight points and eight rebounds off the bench.

To start the first half, West Virginia Wesleyan came out hot getting an early 12-3 advantage within the first three minutes of the game. Jeremiah Moore was responsible for the first three points for the Yellow Jackets. Moore added another two from the foul line to continue his scoring. A quick four points from the Bobcats couldn't stop WVSU from hitting three-straight three-pointers coming from Pittman, Abram, and Watkins to get the lead within one point, 16-15, with 14 minutes to go.

West Virginia Wesleyan then went on a quick 4-0 run to extend their lead to five, 20-15, going into the first media timeout at the 13-minute mark. Coming out of the timeout, WVWC added another quick nine points with 11 minutes left, 29-15. A three from Abram at the 10-minute mark ended the three-minute scoring drought for West Virginia State to help shred the lead to 11 points going into the second media timeout, 29-18.

Coming out of the timeout, a tip-in from Pittman got the Yellow Jackets back within single digits, 29-20, with nine minutes remaining in the half. This gave WVSU the spark they needed as Abram added five quick points to force a West Virginia Wesleyan timeout with eight minutes remaining, 29-25. The Bobcats added a three, but this couldn't stop the Yellow Jackets from going on an 11-3 run to give them their first lead of the game, 36-32, with six minutes remaining. Going into the final media timeout at the five-minute mark, both teams traded jumpers and WVSU maintained their four-point lead, 38-34.

West Virginia State sped up the Bobcats in the final five minutes of the half.  The Yellow Jackets used this to finally take control of the half. A trey from Watkins and a basket from Pittman gave them a double-digit lead with two-and-a-half minutes remaining, 46-36. To end the half, WVSU went on a 10-0 run over the final two minutes to gain a 20-point cushion, 56-36. West Virginia State outscored West Virginia Wesleyan 41-7 in the last ten minutes.

To start the second half, both teams struggled to score in the first two minutes. A three-pointer by Abram gave the Yellow Jackets their largest lead of the game, 60-38, with 18 minutes remaining. The teams went back and forth until a 9-3 run for the Bobcats reduced the lead to 16 points, 65-49, at the first media timeout with 14 minutes to go in the game.

Coming out of the timeout, WVSU maintained a large double-digit lead. A trey from Abram and a tip-in from Sheard gave WVSU a 21-point lead, 70-49. The Bobcats continued to fight back for next two minutes, but the Yellow Jackets always found a way to counter. Abram continued his great foul shooting to get the lead back to 17 points with 12 minutes remaining, 75-58. A 5-2 run for West Virginia Wesleyan helped reduce the lead to 14 points going into the second media timeout, 77-63.

With nine minutes remaining in the game, a pair of foul shots from Pittman ended the WVWC run, 79-66. However, a three right after got the Bobcats back within 10 points. Abram continued his hot shooting and made two treys to help swing momentum back to the Yellow Jackets with seven minutes remaining, 85-69. A 7-2 run for West Virginia Wesleyan cut the lead to 11 points, 87-79, going into the final five minutes of the game.

From the five-minute mark to the three-minute mark of the game, WVSU maintained its double-digit lead despite the effort of the Bobcats. However, a quick trey got WVWC back within 10 points, 93-83, with two-and-a-half minutes remaining in the game. Over the final two-and-a-half minutes, the Bobcats pulled the score back within single-digits, but WVSU made its foul shots to secure the win.

WVSU shot extremely well from three-point range at 52 percent compared to West Virginia Wesleyan's 36 percent.
