Yellow Jackets slip late at Fairmont State, 85-77

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University women's basketball team dropped a road game to Fairmont State, 85-77, on Saturday afternoon. State led at the end of each of the first three quarters, but fell behind in the fourth quarter and never caught back up.

WVSU falls to 5-2 overall, 1-2 in the Mountain East Conference with the defeat. Meanwhile, FSU leaps to 5-2 on the season, 4-0 in the MEC with the win.

Senior guard Alana Kramer led the Yellow Jackets in scoring with a season-high 16 points. ZZ Russell and Shelby Harmeyer also scored in double-figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Junior forward Destiny Fields registered a season-high 12 rebounds while adding eight points.

West Virginia State jumped out front early on by scoring six straight off two turnovers to take a five-point lead, 10-5. Alana Kramer, Alexis Hall, and Destiny Fields all scored with driving layups during the stretch to give WVSU the edge with 6:30 remaining in the first quarter.

Fairmont State turned the tide late in the opening period with seven unanswered points in just over a minute of play. A three-pointer made by Katy Darnell at the end of the run put the Falcons up by one, 18-17, with two minutes left in the quarter.

The Yellow Jackets made the final two minutes of the first period count by tallying seven points while holding Fairmont to a goose egg. Shelby Harmeyer was the last to score in the opening ten minutes with a trey that gave State a six-point advantage, 24-18, going into the second stanza.

WVSU started the second quarter strong and increased its advantage to double-digits within three-and-a-half minutes. Russell knocked down a shot from behind the arc to cap the 7-3 run that left the Yellow Jackets with a 10-point lead, 31-21.

The Falcons went on an 11-4 run over the next four minutes to shrink the lead to three, 35-32. Kramer then hit a jumper and assisted on a layup by Caroline Scott in the final two minutes to grow the lead to seven, 39-32, before halftime.

Fairmont started the second half on a 9-3 run to get back to within one point of State, 42-41. WVSU flipped the script shortly thereafter with a 12-2 run over a four-minute span to give the Yellow Jackets their largest lead of the game, 54-43.

The Falcons then seized the momentum and went on a 14-6 run to close out the third quarter. Four three-pointers were made by Fairmont during the run to close the gap between the two teams. State was left with a slim three-point edge, 60-57, going into the final ten minutes.

Shots did not fall for West Virginia State in the fourth quarter. The Yellow Jackets shot 8-of-22 (36.4 percent) from the floor and 1-of-10 (10 percent) from three-point range to let the contest slip away. The Falcons outscored State, 28-17, in the final stanza to claim the victory.

State will travel to Wheeling next to challenge the Cardinals on Wednesday, Dec. 8th. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
