INSTITUTE, W.VA. – Red-hot West Virginia State Volleyball continues its trek through the Mountain East Conference with another pair of league games this week.
THE SCOOP ON STATE
WVSU enters Tuesday's tilt at West Liberty with an 18-2 ledger, and remain perfect in MEC play, having not surrendered a single set with a 7-0 record. The Yellow Jackets have dropped just eight sets all season. State holds a steady lead over the South Division and carries the best over record amongst MEC opponents. Their 13-match win streak ties with upcoming opponent Wheeling for a league-best.
Jenna Dufresne continues to dominate offensively, topping the squad with 266 kills, a league-best. The senior has tallied double-digit kills in five consecutive contests, and has only tallied single-digits in four matches this season. Dufresne's .326 hitting efficiency ranks third in the MEC, and she also sits in second averaging nearly five kills a set (4.59).
Also leading the league is veteran Grace Martin, who averages 1.30 blocks per set. Her 82 total rejections is second in MEC ranks, and her 66 block assists is also a league-best.
ACES WILD
The Yellow Jackets post three leaders in the Top 10 for service aces, more than any other team in the league. Sophomores Peri Martin (26, .46 per set) and Kiersten Eggleton (27, .45 per set) rank third and sixth, respectively, while Grace Martin again returns to the rankings, coming in at No. 9 with 26 total and .41 per set.
SCOUTING THE HILLTOPPERS
West Liberty enters the week on a 13-10 clip and are 4-3 in conference play as they sit in third in the North Division. The Hilltoppers have won two in a row, sweeping Glenville State and trumping Concord 3-1. They lost a pair of five-setters to Notre Dame and Wheeling, and also fell victim to a sweep against Fairmont State.
Leading the way for West Liberty is graduate student Madison Clayton, who carries 205 kills with a .310 percentage into Tuesday. The team's main setter, junior Kirsten Bogunovich, has dished out a team-best 567 assists, averaging nearly seven assists per set. Clayton also sits just behind Martin on league-leading blocks, with 1.10 per set, but actually has an MEC-best 86.
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS
Perennial league powerhouses Wheeling lead the North Division with a 16-4 overall record. The squad will host Charleston on Tuesday before visiting WVSU Friday. While the Cardinals also carry a perfect 7-0 record in league action, they outlasted West Liberty in five sets on the road.
Wheeling boasts a roster with three players who have registered 130 kills or more, led by senior right side's Lexi Reinert's 156. Sophomore Karly Niesen has dished out an impressive 787 assists, and senior libero Audrey Francis has tallied almost 500 digs at 497, averaging nearly seven per set (6.81).
