INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State's women's volleyball team hit an impressive .374 attacking percentage in defeating the Alderson Broaddus Battlers in straight sets in the Walker Convocation Center on Thursday, 25-8, 25-14, 25-17.
WVSU (17-2, 6-0 MEC) has not lost a set in Mountain East Conference play and hit .374 in the match. Alderson Broaddus (4-6. 0-6 MEC) hit just .059 and accumulated 19 attacking errors on 101 attempts and had 25 kills.
The Yellow Jackets took the first set in convincing fashion, forcing a sideout on each of the Battlers' services except for the first serve of the match and used runs of 7-0, 7-0 and 5-0.
Alex Darby was the only Yellow Jacket to service twice in the set.
Jenna Dufresne and
Natalie Beer were deadly accurate in the set, hitting .857 and .800 respectively.
Kiersten Eggleton had eight assists.
The second set was a little closer and the WVSU's hitting percentage in the set cooled off considerably from the .565 they hit in the first set, hitting .286 in the second frame. A 4-0 run at 2-1 and a 6-0 run at 6-2 put the Yellow Jackets ahead 12-3 and they would coast to the 25-14 set two victory after the Battlers were called for hitting the ball twice.
The third set started out with two lead changes at 2-3 and then 4-3 but
Kiersten Eggleton served two straight points and put WVSU up for good in the third set. The Yellow Jackets hit .341 in the third set with
Emily Davis leading the way with six kills in the set. Freshman
Isabella Weiler slammed two of the final three points in the set and sent Alderson Broaddus back to Philippi with the loss.
The Yellow Jackets sent a Battler attack back onto their side of the court 10 times tonight with
Grace Martin getting six block assists and Dufresne getting five. Dufresne also had 16 kills on the night, coming just two digs short of a double-double. Eggleton had 19 assists and
Peri Martin assisted 11 attacks.
Alex Darby racked up 13 digs and
Rachelle Madison had 12.
It's a short turnaround for the Yellow Jackets with Notre Dame College coming to town for another cross-divisional match in the Walker Convocation Center tomorrow night at 7 pm. The Falcons are 12-8 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
